Goes into comp
“Hey, what do you guys play?”
Them: “I can play anything.”
“What are you good at?”
Them: “ I’m good at everything.”
No you’re not, there’s no way. I hate that response.
I want you to play what you’re good at and they can have no time on something and they’re like “oh I can play whatever”.
Then we lose because he’s never used Hammond before.
I know there’s flexing but what’s the point of playing if you don’t even have a preference?
Is anyone here that type of player?

I promise that I really can play anything comfortably. I will always pick last and it’s worked out pretty well for me. Don’t hate.

So you have nothing you’re especially good at?
I have come to be really good at Reinhardt and Mercy because that’s where most of my time ends up being spent as a flex player (most people don’t want to play those roles, so that’s what I usually end up with), but that doesn’t mean I can’t play the other heroes well. I play a LOT of mystery heroes to stay sharp across all of them. I don’t hesitate for a second to switch to whatever hero we need most. We need more players like that. I can’t stand hearing “I can’t play shield tank” or something. What they mean is “I won’t”. Everyone should put in some time practicing everything so you can help the team more when it’s needed. Maining is fine, but not if it means you lose if you can’t play that hero.

I’ve noticed that it’s really easy to end up on a character that you aren’t good at because of how random things are. I wish there was a way to play different characters at different ranks. If there was, it would be a lot easier to actually play everything without being terrible 50% of the time.
Hah!! You didn’t get me, the ad popped up.

Not everyone is one dimensional.
I literally can play everything but Doomfist.
Ok Sym. Now what?

I’m not, but there are genuinely some pretty good flex players.
Take xFatKing, for example: he has several accounts (most around 4.2-4.3k, but he also has T500), and will play any role that is needed at that level.
His best character, as he himself admits, is Zarya, but just about anything he plays, from Ana to Tracer to McCree to DVa is quite good.
Though sadly by watching his streams you may think he’s an Ana main, because she is a must-pick and, unlike what the forums say, high GM players DO NOT enjoy playing as supports in the majority of the matches…

Sometimes I like it when someone tells me specifically what would be beneifical - like what type of tank or healer is needed.
I like to think I’m good at playing different styles of tanks/healers, so if someone tells me which one they would prefer to have, I can find one that I’m good/decent at playing.
Also sometimes that’s code for ‘shoot, the characters I wanted to play are taken.’
I didn’t say one tricking or something. You can be more familiar with certain classes or heroes without being one dimensional.
Hey I can carry with Sym, boi
What I mean is, a good player saying “i can play anything” is fine he is giving room for other people’s inflexibility.
No good player is going to commit to something he can’t play.
Like I say “I will go widow if we need it for Pharmercy” but I will start out on McCree.
My hours on McCree are much higher than widow, but I can play the widow if needed.
(also my most played by hours is Pharah, but I still end up being the most competent hitscan in most of my games)
A bad player saying that…well you are not really complaining about what he says so much as his bad play.
Also don’t let this account mislead you, I have a plat border account also. So probably around 2000 hours in the game.
All this means is you’re effectively a Moira/Rein/Orisa/Zen specialist. Also maybe some Junkrat and used to main Mercy

For me and only me, I am flex type of player.
I tend to at least learn 2 heroes from each category to help myself adapt to different situations.
Offense heroes: Tracer and Sombra
Defense Heroes: Hanzo (Before the rework) and Mei
Tanks: Zarya and Orisa Even though I hate playing tank.
Support: Ana and Mercy I normally play main healers.
But as the time progress, I am opening up my hero pool selection as I can play just about every offense heroes quite effectively, well enough to hold up my own weight, even though some does not match my play style at all.
For tanks, I am learning to play all tanks, still challenging as I rarely play tank in any video game as I normally play characters that match me, which are fast and nimble characters.
For supports, like I said I normally play main healers so Ana, Mercy and Moria, with Lucio, I feel like I am not as effective nor impactful as I feel like all I have to do is just merely exist and my team gets full benefit. Zenyatta, I can play him, but his lack of mobility is what kill it for me.
Other than that, I tend to have favorite which is Sombra, Mercy and Mei.
I’m not sure how you can declare that to be the case. There are plenty of games where nobody is comfortable playing DPS and I do that, too. I hit top 500 last season with Rein, Sombra, and Mercy as my top three played in that order. I had around an 80% win percentage with both Rein and Sombra at the time. I climbed from plat to masters in season 2 with Tracer. I routinely have games where I play three or four different heroes. I put work into everybody so that I can flex. It’s how I like to play and I solo queued from plat to GM by doing it. It’s what I always recommend for players trying to climb. Don’t discount it just because you can’t do it.

They probably just mean that they’re willing to fill what’s needed, not that they’re competent on literally every hero. You have to admit, it’s more common that the person asking wants it THEIR way, so why not side-step some toxicity by saying you’re willing to pick for the team if you’re a flex?
So i’ve actually offered to play anything before and got some pretty overwhelmingly negative responses. I left out the “I can play anything” part. I’ll say something like “you guys go ahead and pick, I’ll just fill in whats needed”.
Its odd, I was just trying to be nice, but I get met with some pretty nasty responses. I thought thats what people want lol

Maybe they assume you’ll pick the “selfish” fills like Roadhog for a tank?
I think it’s just because a lot of people are dubious at the idea of somebody being able to effectively play such a wide range of roles. People reallllly want their team mates to be confident about what they’re doing and be able to back it up.
Personally I don’t mind seeing “I’ll fill” because that at least means I can play what I want/am good at and they’ll try to fill out the weaknesses in the comp. Though most of the time they turn out kinda meh, can’t blame em though, I prefer those guys over tilters.

Not always selfish I will pick Hog if the healing can’t sustain 2 tanks.
