This happens so often. Over the weekend I got reported at least twice for being “afk”
-
on KR defence our ana staggered just as I was already on my way back and the others had all respawned and were coming up behind me. I hit “group up” 3 times then stand and wait looking at spawn waiting for ana to join us. Ana is just about there an one of our team puts in game chat “our tank is afk - please report” and got a couple "ok"s back.

against a bastion and mauga, again on KR in fact, but a different game. I got caught a bit out of position and mauga used his shout so I ducked out and waited until he reloaded at which point, just as I went to come out of hiding, bastion transformed and started shooting the corner where I was stuck. Before the bastion is even finished someone puts in GAME chat “tank afk - reporting” or something like that. We even went on to win and I had more than double the elims of the other tank at that point so obviously was doing some good work.
What is wrong with people? It’s definitely a low-rank thing that if your tank is not moving for more than 5 seconds then they are considered afk. Other times I’ve died first and when I respawn I see there is maybe 1-2 people left in the fight so I wait in spawn for others to respawn and I get accused of being AFK if 1 respawns and I stand and wait for the others that missed the wave, especially if the others include our main support and the enemy team is close to our spawn.
I watch Cyx play hog and have been trying to learn from him. He often stands in cover while his resource meter recharges and while waiting for teammates to come back or abilities to run out on an enemy (mauga, bastion, etc.). I’ve started to think a bit more and do that kind of thing more rather than constantly thinking I have to be doing busy work, but it’s just leading to me getting reported for being afk more often.

This game is wild. You have a team of people committed to staggering and they want to report YOU for having a brain. You cannot get that experience in any other team based game. Usually the person feeding is the only who gets death threats, not the other way around!

Im all for grouping and not staggering. But dont need to wait for your team in spawn if you’re tank. There is a middle ground between walking blindly to point when your supports are respawning and standing around in spawn and doing nothing. You can walk out and take some map control even if they’re dead, ana is going to sit behind you anyway so getting a head start is fine. If you’re literally waiting for her in spawn she is going to have to wait for you to take space 20-30m in front of spawn later.
As for reports, its automated and wont trigger unless you get mass reported. Pissing of couple of lobbies wont matter so don’t worry about it.

Yes, it is. In low rank you will often see people waddeling one by one and never looking back, resulting into staggering that will charge the enemy and loose you valuable time.
Its also one of the big reasons they implemented the team respawn and why Mercy is kind of crazy in low rank. With a rez, you can stop a stagger and try to push your team to play as a team.
Its exhausting, but what can you do?

one problem there: we dont know how many reports it takes. We dont know if the system is actually tallying them correctly ans what if it isnt a couple lobbies here and there, what if it’s 10 straight lobbies he gets with this going on.
And what was op’s crime? Trying to wait for a regroup. What if you’re a solo player and they’re a 4 stack? Best believe he’s getting reported. Maybe 2 duos and they wont blame their partner, so they blame the “afk” guy.
In some of those games his angry team rants at him. As the forum has shown over and over, if OP says anything back he’s considered a toxic animal that needs to be removed from the game.
Worse still, in some of those games they tell enemy team to report the afk as well. Or they say he’s calling them slurs. Again, OP can’t say anything back according to this community.
i saw these things happen over and over and over to my friends list and their crime is playing qp, being masters to top 500, and being good at the game.
Similarly, I’ve been accused of throwing because I’m standing outside spawn waiting for people. “Group up”
One will walk past me at try to 1v5. Not even a look
Then another one.
And again. This one stares at me as they walk into the enemy
And again.
“support throwing, trash / report support”
The grouped respawn was supposed to mitigate this a bit but I’m still watching my team try to 1v5

When you team is staggered and you are hitting the group up button, don’t just stand still and wait. You gotta fidget back and forth jumping and punching the wall like an ADHD chipmunk that just ate an entire box of cracker jacks.
THEN your team will know you aren’t afk

Nah they just say you’re afk in the sense you’re throwing. I don’t think they actually know what afk means.

Trickling and not regrouping needs to be actioned.
Just keep swinging your hammer to maintain dominance.
well 99% of the community is bad at the game, let’s just action all of them yeah? Problem solved.
Yea, now they just think you’re throwing
I got 99% of my playtime on tank and over half of that on ball. Since i’ve never been punished, i’m guessing its a lot and i doubt OP will be punished.
Depending on comp, you can link up with them if you walk out. Unless you’re playing against a full coordinated dive team you dont really risk dying either unless you go way to far.
I am guessing there is more to this story. I have multiple hundred of hours on tank, I wait for my team to respawn, and not once have I been accused of going afk.
That’s some solid logic there. “Hasn’t happened to me so it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.”
I also havent been actioned, but the difference between us is I’ve watched it happen to my friends list en masse in the last 2 years when none of them had an issue in ow1.
Note i turned all chat and comms off a long time ago, otherwise I’m sure I’d have been hit too
Maybe your friends arent as innocent as they say they are?
Unless he got thrown in with a 4 stack and they all mass reported him. The system is automated so it wouldn’t surprise me.
yeah that must be it. Surely ow2 turned them all into toxic ragers and racists.
It is because he is standing in spawn. Seriously. Never do that. Just walk out the door and these freaks will never say anything. It’s part of the low rank charm.
Yeah, if someone is in spawn, not moving, I would accuse them of being afk also.
