So I was just looking at the Steam charts, and there was a huge drop in players across all games for 1/9/2025: Steam Charts - Tracking What’s Played
Is it the fires in Southern Cali? Maybe something else going on?

I have no idea. The fires in California is the only massive event I can think of. In my home state we’ve had some winter weather and stuff but the power issues were earlier in the week. If anything it should be increasing gaming numbers around here because school is out for the snow days.
Internet connection to steam having issues?
Clearly all games are dying and the apocalypse has arrived. The steam charts have spoken!
Probably a combination of a few things. Common time to vacation, post-holidays return to school, lots of (minor) diseases passing around.
My city is suffering both a common cold outbreak (which isn’t unusual and wouldn’t impact gaming) and a gastro outbreak (which is a little less common and definitely will impact gaming)
I don’t think so. All games seems to be fine.
Rivals got a massive drop for 2 hours because it went down for bringing up S1 patch.
It’s already in it’s way to beat the old record.
I don’t know how long the honeymoon phase will last, it’s been 1 month and the game is doing better than ever.
Who cares about Steam
At least on PlayStation they went from a top 10 game down to a 74th position.
The first thing that comes to mind whenever I see someone pull up stats from Twitch, YT, or Steam is: “OH DEAR GOD WHO CARES?!”
And that is a problem, because there’s no way of saying that in a way that doesn’t make me look like a major league a-hole (which is why I said it in the most ‘over the top’ way imaginable on purpose.) Those reactions are more likely to cause an argument than a discussion.
And to OP I am very sorry, because I can see the point you’re trying to make here (‘maybe this sample size is indicative of trouble in paradise?’) This is not a dig at you as a person at all.
Which led me to ask myself: ‘why don’t I care?’
Is it that I am so out of love with OW that I don’t care if it shuts down tomorrow?
Turns out, I don’t care because I realise my investment of concern does not have a real world impact. To constantly worry over these things is a waste of energy I do not have. My caring or not caring will not change the outcome.
If the numbers imply the game is dying: me worrying about it won’t stop that trend.
If the numbers mean nothing: me worrying about it is an absolute waste of time.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk apparently. Apologies to OP.
Wait I thought up a better reason
with OW being back up in china….CLEARLY all the Chinese users logged onto Battle.net instead of steam for some good ole fashion kings row’ing
We’re back baby!!
Most people.
Only for a couple games like Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 do they not matter.
Everyone went out to touch grass, but those in cold climates couldn’t find the grass under the snow and perished in the extreme weather. Very sad.
You’re suppose to make sure mei isnt around…her colleagues messed around in the cold too and found out…
Maybe they got off OW to await MR’s S1.
Ha!
They finally touched that grass! Now gamer popsicles. Thanks Mei
They need to disable Steam numbers for this game. It’s not even in the top 3 platforms on which people play this game.
Marvel posted another peak today. Cali kids willing to play that game in the flames of hell lol.
I do. It’s a healthy way to make your veggies.
Am I the only one not seeing any significant drop on the provided link? What is everyone else talking about
The Honeymoon phase is for a couple weeks. It already left it. The game is just holding better than average. I have no idea why. It’s a lot of fun, but gamers are gamers. They will pick anything apart and this game has genuine problems. It’s a Christmas Miracle.
Looks like it was because I checked the charts at like 4AM PST. Now the numbers have gone up. When I looked, it was like 50% drop for almost every game on Steam. I was like, whaaaaaat.
