HUGE Competitive Problem

No, I’m not here to complain about how I deserve to be in a higher rank.

I think we can all agree that Overwatch is a team game. If your team isn’t doing well, it is detrimental to how you play for the rest of the match. If you switch to Reinhardt in order to block damage from the other team (because your teammates keep dying), that’s great. But what’s not so great is when people don’t group behind you and use you as you should be used. Even when you spam the “group-up” voice line and speak into the mic that you know they can hear through, if they refuse to cooperate for whatever reason, you will not play your best.

And this goes for all roles. A DPS can not play well if their healer is not playing well and if their tank is not playing well, etc…

My usual SR gain per win is 22 to 24. This is around my average, even if I do relatively OK, or really good.

My usual SR deduction per loss is 20 to 22. The same logic above applies here.

I just ran into three games where our team was under-performing because we had 3 DPS, some DPS were under-performing, the team was not grouping as a whole, etc…

My SR loss for those three games were 26, 26, and 28.

These losses were obviously much bigger than usual, but why? Why should my SR loss be made higher if the team effort was lower, therefore making my stats lower?

The problem isn’t necessarily the throwers or leavers, it’s the SR deduction from the loss they caused you. If three of your team members left – for whatever reason – and you got spawn camped the entire game, the amount of SR you would lose would be greater than the amount that you would normally lose. Your stats in a game like this are clearly not in your control, and you should not be punished for it.

I’ve seen a lot of people on these forums complain about throwers and leavers. A lot of them claim to drop entire ranks from onslaughts of throwers, but I think what’s really occurring is this weird SR deduction.

I made another topic about a solution to this already, but here it is again:

Your SR should not adjust on a match to match basis like it did to me above. It should take an average of many of your games played. If you are continuously playing well, you should then notice an increase in your SR gain over time, and the same logic applies for if you are doing badly every game.

An addition to this would be, instead of the silly card system (which only provides EXP) that occurs at the end of the game, there could be a team vote for MVP. A selection of teammates (excluding yourself and anyone in your group) would appear and you could choose who kept the team together the most and did the best shot-calling and switching. If you continuously got this MVP award, the system would reward you with more SR over time. This would encourage team effort and discourage insta-locking and one-tricking.

This is a team game after all, isn’t it?
