They floated map voting again at the interview last week, but what kind of system would you even want?
I think for quickplay, the mario kart system would work well:
- Each player nominates 1 map from any in the game
- A random player is selected
- You play that player’s map
This system is good because it means you will generally be playing on maps that the community likes, but you can nominate a blacksheep pick and still have a decent chance of playing it.
The one change I’d make is to either reduce the weight of stack voting (e.g. if 2 people vote for Dorado make it a 15% chance of it being chosen instead of 20%) or to give a slight bias towards more unpopular maps (e.g. if you nominate Paris it’s a 15% chance you’re chosen instead of 10%). Basically just to make it so the game doesn’t turn into a 24/7 king’s row server. Oh and also anonymize the votes for obvious reasons
For comp I think a banning system would work better to prevent people from shopping for specific maps their comp is good on. For instance
- Randomly split the teams into team A and team B
- team A picks a gamemode to ban
- team B picks a gamemode to ban
- Randomly select a gamemode to play from the remaining ones
- team B picks a map to ban (skip steps 5/6 if the mode has under 4 maps)
- team A picks a map to ban
- Randomly pick a map from the remaining ones to play obn
But I’m not as confident in this idea
What I really just don’t want a generic display 3 maps whichever gets the most votes is chosen system since that’ll make some maps, even a few decent ones, effectively deleted from the game and also cause people to rage based on vote outcomes
Also maybe (hopium) if they bring map voting they can also re-enable 2CP since the players would had to have vote to play on it so it’s fair to make them play it. I mean it’s not like 2CP is any worse than some of the modes currently in the game anyway

map voting would only work for competitive gameplay. Same with hero bans.
Basically what would have to happen is.
Everyone goes to a loading screen on each of their teams.
They would cast a Vote for 3 banned maps.
Then afterwards they would have to ban several heroes
As for Open Q and role Q it would require players to select maps and go from there.
I wouldn’t want it. Sure, there are some not-so-fun maps. But I still want to play them occasionally.

I think maps should be entirely at random so heroes that rely on specific map geometry are neither abused or left out in the cold.

map voting doesnt really work for overwatch
i would rather you have map/mode selection queue like in tf2, though that might worsen Q times and make certain maps/modes seemingly vanish from the game
a lot of people have strong feelings against certain maps and modes so its difficult
otherwise they need to make it so you can stay in the same lobbies like if it were a custom game
All I know is that if we do get map voting there is no reason for 2cp to not be back in game. Let people who cant be bothered to not play linearly just avoid it so people of culture can enjoy it

None. I don’t want to waste 30 seconds to 1 minute on something that pointless. Yeah I don’t like some maps, but that dislike isn’t worth waiting that long for every game.
People always talk about long queue times. This is effectively the same as adding a minute on to every player’s queue time (depending on how convoluted the voting is supposed to be) since the problem isn’t really the queue time itself, it’s the time difference between looking for a game and actually getting to play.
As a side note, I don’t know why they still didn’t add a “teleport to point” on attack/defense modes and cut the wait time down from 40 seconds to 20 seconds. That’s effectively, just as above, the same as removing 20 seconds from every player’s queue time.
If they had to do map voting, the game gives you 3 random maps and the players choose from them.
Not sure if the 3 maps should all be one game mode, or just random. I’m going to guess they would be from 1 game mode though. For example If you give the players choice to never play a push map, the few who like push maps would never get to play them. So game would give you choice of 3 push maps, or 3 koth, or 3 payload etc.
My preference is the game builds a lobby then picks a mode and shows everyone a set of at least 3 maps (and they should make sure there are at least 3 maps for each mode). Then create a window of time where everyone has a chance to vote the map they’d prefer, and it loads the most popular choice. In the event of a tie, the system picks at random between the winners.
Doesn’t need anything too complex.

It should just be a pre-matchmade setting. “pick your 2/3 favorite maps” “pick your 2/3 least favorite maps” and you just get the favored maps a bit more, and the less favored maps a bit less. I don’t think it should be map voting or map picking. At least in QP you should have a bit of influence like this.

I would want not to have one.
If there is no way avoiding it, then have 3 of most underplayed maps and let people vote which to play. When a map is being played its rating will rise and it will appear more rarely.
Ofc no one would like such system because most want kings row to the the only map in the game, but it is the most fair system and creates a loop where no map will be overplayed.
