How to win at Hero Mastery Gauntlet

Disclaimer: This is mostly for players stuck on Expert or Legendary difficulties. I found that you can pretty much get away with anything on Normal and Hard difficulties.

I managed to complete all Event Gauntlet Challenges as well as most of the Lifetime Challenges.

What I learned is that Tower B is the most important Tower to keep alive. If you have to defend 2 Towers at once, always prioritize Tower B over the other 2. The reason why I say this is because when you get to Round 10, the “bosses” will spawn by the front door.

Tower B is the farthest Tower from the door so this allows your team to kill as many enemies as possible before they can do any real damage to the Tower.

As for what heroes to play, I say avoid any hero that requires you to get up close. Some expectations are D.VA, Mauga, and Roadhog simply because they deal some much damage. Avoid playing Mercy. You need firepower and Mercy’s BB gun isn’t going to cut it.

Here are some Tower upgrades I think perform the best on Expert and Legendary:

Ballistic Turret
Freeze Turret
Frost Barrels
Damage Boost
Stun Field
Slowdown Field
Tower Repair

Re-rolls are NOT entirely random. Turrets re-roll other turrets. Barrels re-roll other barrels. Area effects re-roll other area effects. Tower defense re-roll other Tower defense. So if you’re wondering why you keep getting a Barrel instead of Tower Repair everytime you re-roll, its because Barrels can only re-roll other barrels.

You can look under Tower Upgrades under “Instructions” on The Gauntlet screen for further details.

One more thing. Try not the venture off on your own for to long especially as the rounds get harder. You’ll become overwhelmed and eventually die leaving your team down a player. This doesn’t necessarily mean the game is over, but the odds of winning decrease dramatically.

Thanks for the tips but I have one question. I just found out that you can actually re-roll power-up instead of just using the ones which were randomly chosen at the start of the match but how do you do it?
I see that with the interact key you choose to buy the current power-up but how do you change it?

I keep getting randomly one shot in the last round on expert :pensive:

Pressing F buys the current power up, and holding F rerolls it. Every time you reroll it gets more expensive to do, so I think it’s only worth to reroll once and I only do it trying to get tower heal.

What comp did you use to beat expert and legendary?

The way you win at this stupid boring Hero Gauntlet is to not play it because it’s stupid and boring and it takes FOOORRREEEEVVVVEEERRRR

So far I’ve only beaten legendary one time and my team ran mauga, torb, and zen. From what I can tell though from my own games and the leaderboard the best tanks are mauga and dva, best dps are torb and bastion, and the best supports are bap and zen. There’s other picks that are okay too, have seen cassidy and sojourn be good.

Is it just me or is legendary also locked for everyone else? I’ve 5-star’d expert mode and 4-star’d the hard mode, yet it still wont unlock.

Is there some sort of “special objective” I have to complete in order to unlock these?

I think all you have to do is win while also achieving at least 4 stars. I know I just got 4 stars on expert but we died on the last round and didn’t end up unlocking legendary, so that’s as far as I know.

I can’t unlock it either, I’ve beaten expert with 4 stars a bunch of times. Still can’t play legendary

Very difficult to do this with randoms at higher difficulties

I have found this is the best strat for vs. AI.legendary with. AI.bots.

Recall, this mode is non-sustainable as queue times are already 20mins for expert/legend during off-hours. It’s still 3-8 mins during prime-time to launch the easier modes and then you have all the incompatible humans with their trollish leaves and the like.

For this reason I recommend venturing towards low-death-count playouts, being alone, solo queueing vs. AI.legends and take the bot teammates. Do well, accept the RNG of the playout, get late rounds etc. Even find ez solves and low cal farming that costs almost no effort from anyone.

With AI teammates, the queues are faster, and your gameplay is faster. And you almost always win. Except the only human involved was you, and you can’t save your replays or collect any data on the experience. But it’s worth a good screenshot when you compare human queues to vs. AI queues and the humans are just so much worse.

There are also UI bugs that also lock you into the gauntlet menu fwiw.

I got it last night with random players (legendary mode without dying).

  • Dva (me)
  • Reaper
  • Illari

you were in a stack.

the queues took 10 mins in solo we queued the entire night and got nothing.
the no deaths with randoms is hard because of queue times.

No, playing only with random players, I was not playing in a stack with friends.

I would recommend always having torb as a dps.

Get the turrets for all towers and move them to the spawn door for the last round so they pretty much just immediately kill the “champion” heroes that come out.
Fix turrets as often as possible and the legendary should be a breeze.

I’ve gotten through legendary a few times with 5 stars. Once with mauga, bastion, mercy. And another time with hamster, torb, mercy. (Solo queued both times)

The torb, hamster round was easier as we ended with basically all towers on full health. (I’m not a very good mauga though, so that might have affected it)

did you play for keeping spawn doors open and/or going to cubicle?

when im beating legendary with bots (2 bot teammates), I don’t reroll based on their picks. trying to find a 0 death solve for different heroes that decouples from the efforts of others. got it done as sombra basically afk stealth and bots carried better than any humans ever could.

i like the with ai mode but would like the bugs fixed and replays/data record to matter. The ai-team is more futureproof, since humans troll and leave and the queues for this mode will skyrocket in a week.

We didn’t reroll any towers, had no tower regens.

The turrets kept the enemy heroes at bay with a little help from torb at the door.
Getting through while not dying is just about being careful, and not getting an elite grenade in your face. (That keeps happening to me…)

I tried a few different heroes with ai teammates, but they tend to stop moving on the disappearing platforms and getting themselves killed repeatedly in my games. So the ai has been more difficult than people for me. Never gotten through a legendary ai.

did 1100 rounds so far yay

I believe it was a bug. I simply re-did it and got 5 stars again and it unlocked for me. I was playing with 2 other people though in a group when it happened though, so.

Try it with a group if you can. That’s what fixed it for me
