Most people think that Death Blossom is supposed to be used to wipe the enemy team, and if you run a strategy like graviton, bubble, death blossom; or earth shatter, nano boost, blossom; or EMP, damage amp, speed boost death blossom- then you would be right.
Most players want to use Death Blossom by itself to team wipe.
However, at around mid platinum and above many of you will notice that Death Blossom by itself isn’t really good at securing more than one or two kills most of the time. You actually have to have some team coordination to pull off big plays. Crazy, I know.
Then What is a Solo Blossom Good For?
A solo Death Blossom(DB) is good for making up for two of Reaper’s inherent deficiencies:
Anti-Air click me tee-heeReaper can use Death Blossom from an pardon the pun Overwatch position to take out aerial threats like Pharah, and Mercy but also characters that are often in the air like Doomfist or Genji
Killing Characters with small hitboxesReaper's shotguns are not suited for killing small targets, at least not at a consistently quick speed. For that reason, if you encounter an enemy Lucio, Tracer, Genji, Sombra, Symmtra, Ana, Widowmaker or Hanzo then you may need to use Death Blossom to kill them if they are trying to stall the point or if they might be trying to use their ultimate to turn the tides in your favor. Remember, solo ulting an enemy isn't a bad move if not ulting would lose you the team fight. Specifically, you will want to use it to kill Genji during his ultimate. If you don't out right kill him then you should force him to waste some of his time trying to deflect
In all honesty, the higher you rank up the less you will think of death blossom as a super duper move that wins you the game, and more like a general ability on a long cooldown, and you should treat it as such.
This is why often I go whole rounds or games without ever using DB as it often it is too risky to use. So don’t be afraid not to use DB and don’t be afraid of using it.
Can confirm, this guide is accurate. Solo death blossoms are more viable but only on these targets as his DPS actually goes down when you ultimate. I might not be a pro Reaper (but then again, who is, the character is basically unusable at the highest levels) but this is all I use my death blossom for when I am trying. Like, sometimes you use it to solo ult that Roadhog that just missed his hook. Just to taunt him. You only need to pray that he does not realize he can walk through it and kill you. They never do, however. I theorize the loud “DIE DIE DIE” scares people into believing the ultimate is decent.
Yeah, solo ulting a Pharah or Doomfist for just BEING there is not a good idea and is a waste of an ult. Counter ulting a blading Genji with deflect and dash down? Sure. The better advice would be to use it against 2-3 people sometimes, and to not always go for “SUPER CRAZY ULT FROM ABOVE” death blossoms.
Improve your aim instead of ulting small targets lmao
You can only improve your aim so much against small targets with Reaper. The RNG is either with or against you. There’s a reason why even good Reaper’s don’t have an accuracy rating above 38% you know.
There’s no longer RNG to Reaper’s headshot mechanic, and his shotgun spread is in a consistent spray. Just because they’re a “small target” doesn’t mean you can’t kill them in less than 2 seconds without ulting.
