I stopped playing three years ago, but I was thinking the other day what would make ME want to come back, and other players agreed with my idea, so I thought I’d share it.
Option 1 – Finally commit to the promise of PvE (obviously).
But here’s a much easier trick:
Change how Play of the Game works.
Right now, Play of the Game is a shallow end-screen highlight of someone who got the most kills to their name. It’s almost always a DPS ult.
But instead of making it a player ego flex, turn it into a memorable highlight.
If a DPS carries and ults everything on the payload resulting in a win, then sure—give that DPS Play of the Game.
But when it’s clearly a team effort (Nano Boost on Reaper, Reinhardt stuns, Nano-Death Blossom), make the Play of the Game reflect that moment!
Show a cutscene of Ana, Reaper, and Reinhardt high-fiving each other with dialogue in sync with their characters, and instead of just highlighting one player, give it a different badge:
- 2-person PotG = Deadly Duo
- 3-person PotG = Tactical Trinity
- 4-person PotG = Formidable Four
- 5-person PotG = All-Star Quintessence
Use your Blizzard magic to have the camera zoom out and get cool angles of every player that made it happen.
I’ll give you an example:
- Baptiste uses Matrix
- D.Va gets in front of it and uses Defense Matrix
- Soldier gets behind it and uses his ult
- Ana Nanos Soldier
- Cassidy shoots down the Genji who is trying to dash behind the team
→ Team-kill!!
The Play of the Game could zoom in on Baptiste—he ults.
Switch to D.Va—she Matrixes.
Switch to Ana—she Nanos Soldier.
Switch to Soldier—he kills everyone except Genji (who’s flanking).
Switch to Cassidy—he grenade + headshots the Genji, saving Soldier.
Followed by all five team members high-fiving each other. Soldier can stand in the middle (most kills) and say his catchphrase like:
“Teamwork always pays off.”
If it’s Reaper, he could say something more in character, like:
“You vultures are stealing my kills…”
It’s not difficult to do. Blizzard has the resources. And if you did this, you’d be promoting memories and teamwork, not just DPS chasing their own egos—which has led to massive toxicity and players leaving the game.
