How to play Doomfist?

I’m in severe need of assistance here, because this character is fun but I’m genuinely awful with him.

it is just another version of winston

I still play him as if he was a DPS from Overwatch Uno. It does not work. Don’t do that. Hopefully that helps!

This was from 2 years ago but still applies.

after adding 5 flying hero comp, and JUNO Being new and popular
the fact that tank with ARMOR is super OP and counts as 2 tanks without.

Just leave it for now.
it plays like tracer most of the ways and then goes in after 1 kill

All about cooldown management and positioning.

You start with your big slam. You want to use it where the enemy team are grouped up the most. The damage is cute but the shield and ult charge it gives you are what you really cycle it for.

After you slam, you assess. Is the enemy team trying to turn you into Swiss cheese? Press block to mitigate that damage and get a BEEG PAWNCH.

Is the enemy team kind of ignoring you? Charge a punch and see what they think. If they’re still ignoring you as you charge your punch, punch them into a wall like a child throwing a tantrum. They should now look at you so you can show them your cool block move.

If you’ve punched someone, preferably into a wall, congratulations! You may now began filling their head full of your knuckle duster shotgun shells. At this point in time your cooldowns should be coming back up.

How did your engage go? Did you do good, deal good damage, and not take too much damage? Take a quick second behind cover while your finger blasters reload and then slam back in for more fun! Did you get bullied and get lots of ouchies and booboos? Punch your way to your healers you big stupid baby. You need time to cool off before you’re ready for another hissy fit.

Or just ult. Your ult basically just lets you rotate faster and hopefully punch someone into a wall with your free empowered punch. They thought they were going to punish you for getting caught out or get a 5 second break from your baby rage while you retreated to your healers? Nah, Meteor Strike says it’s still punching time.

Rinse and repeat and keep fishing for empowered punches. They’re what really set you up for big plays. Good luck! Happy fisting!

Not a DF main but can give basic tips. You want to prioritize playing your cooldowns. Don’t demand resources from your team (aka support help) if you don’t have things ready to use.

Do NOT leap into a fight and then throw up block. Block should be used most of the time when you have cover near by. Play the cover via poking a little and then when you have pulled attention peek the corner with block.

Leap/ultimate are best used as tools to either cut off escape or escape for yourself. You can throw a leap in if your playing off an ally. But figuring out when to actually make the most use of leap is just going to take practice over time.

Finally when it comes to your rocket punch it like Brig’s shield bash is often used for movement. Don’t hold onto it in hopes of getting a combo or an empowered punch. Sometimes simply pulling attention and then RPing away when they are coming out of position after you is the better play.

I can’t help you with bread and butter combos for getting kills.

Sombra is not gonna make you enjoy it. Change your tank.

Sombra don’t make ANYTHING enjoyable.

Practice in Doomfist parkour. Genuinely improved my ability to play the hero by like 60%.

Also, watch some high rank Doomfist mains to see what strategies the employ in their matches.

His abilities should really be looked at as mobility cd’s (not block obvi). Unless you’re absolutely sure your target is isolated, going into an engagement using both slam and punch will prolly get you killed. Try and always save one of those cd’s to disengage.

His primary fire is his primary source of dmg, not slam, and realistically not his punch either.

Once you understand how to keep yourself alive without assistance, getting better with him comes easier.

Thanks for the help, friends, I appreciate it!

Don’t be afraid to dive their backline, cause havoc and try to one combo one of their supports. If you manage to kill one support it’s basically a win most of the time.
And use a lot of melee between your cooldowns or after your skills to finish people off.

Make him a dps again so we can all play him. Reworking doom was the dumbest decision the game has made besides 5v5

Not really. When that video was made, they hadn’t reworked his block nor his fist charge.

How were they changed? Legit did not know, sorry OP

Here’s just a few examples of important updates for him post 2022.

TANK

Doomfist
Developer Comments: One of the most effective uses for an ultimate ability like Meteor Strike is to save it as an escape in order to grab a health pack instead of using it against his foes. Doomfist will now recover health during the targeting phase so that it can be used more offensively.

Meteor Strike
Now regenerates 75 health per second while in the air.
Ultimate cost increased 16%.

Doomfist
Health increased from 300 to 375.

Rocket Punch
Max impact damage increased from 50 to 75.
Max wall slam damage increased from 30 to 40.

Doomfist
Developer Comments: This quality-of-life improvement streamlines the transition between charging up an empowered Rocket Punch and another ability by removing the requirement of pressing the cancel input first.

Rocket Punch
The empowered punch is no longer consumed when the windup is canceled by using Seismic Slam or Power Block.

Start using him last point/overtime when you need to get out of spawn asap

Your providing value to your team whether you can play him or not just being there to contest.

The chaos only benefits Dooms kit & makes you harder to focus, however if you find your self alone use slam/punch for mobility…using block in between to just stay alive & contest.

If you’re going to use punch offensively, make sure it’s a sure thing. I’ve won plenty of games with a good punch or 2 knocking enemies off the objective in overtime.

This is how I learned to play him. I think he’s incredibly easy to play competently…that is until all the counters come out.

But like any hero you want to main, once you “master” their kit… you learn to play around counters with practice

Oh I also forgot to mention: Get to know where mega healthpacks are on all maps. DF does need to disrupt the backline to get his value, to do that sometimes its just not possible to get heals. Learn to rotate around megas, having that knowledge will enable riskier dives.

Edit tangent: this is low-key one of the reasons Som is a great doom counter. Denying the megas is a big deal to me.
