Everything about this game is competitive focused, steamers and owl encourage competitiveness, SR and gold weapons set milestones for people.
But many people don’t care about the ladder. They dont care about rank or climbing, some get stressed/anxious. They still want want to play this game with their friends and play their favorite heroes.
There is literary no reason to keep playing qp aside from the xp.
I have an idea that might make this game less repetitive and more engaging for its players.
Challenges. Adding daily/weekly challenges to the game much like how fortnite and destiny 2 do.
Issues: People might not try to actually complete game objectives and much rather just farm challenges. So to counter this the challenges can be objective and team play focused while being exclusive to quick play.
Weekly challenges (these change every week and are meant to take time to complete, each give around 5000xp).
Push payload 1000m
Block 100,000 damage
Do 100000 healing
Receive 4000 healing from payload
Do 100,000 damage
Daily challenges (there are easier/faster and offer less xp and change every day) (800-2000xp)
20000 healing done
block 20,000 damage
resurrect 10 players
heal 2000 as zenyatta
hack 20 enemies
have 10 player killstreak
10 critical hits as mccree
get 4 environmental kills
halt 3 enemies at once
teleport 6 people
Challenges can be hero focused in order to encourage people to play more heroes instead of one tricking the ones they are good with.
They have the potential to fix so much thats wrong with quick play. Itll fix the 5 dps 1 lucio meta in nearly every game, the low pickrate of some heroes, the lack of healers and tanks etc.
Tell me what you guys think

I feel like this would make quickplay even worse. It’d be like people doing arcade solely for lootboxes and getting super tilted when they lose.

but even if u lose u can still complete the challange

I’d rather not have any character specific ones, because you want people to try to win instead of just dueling off in a corner for the entirely of the match.
I don’t see why we can’t just get a system like arcade where you do 9 games to get 3 lootboxes. More people would play qp and try to win; the same people would still play arcade to get those loot boxes.

The problem is then everyone would want to do the challenge first, so if the challenge is “20000 healing done” then everyone would want to play healers…
it would be a different one for each player

It think a larger XP reward for consecutive rounds played would help to some degree. Being one of the main problems with QP is you play a round, 1/2 the server leaves or this map shows and people bail. It makes for more time in the queue and less time playing. Maybe a boost for playing less popular classes of heroes, just to reward better team comps.
many would not care, some would and anything that stops the all DPS or double sniper+tracer+genji comps would help a bit.
The match maker also seems to get rather wonky some times. I get this part of it is tricky but some of the team average match making I see in QP is just horrible. Team of low golds and a silver with one 3k+ player vs a team of plats. Maybe a 4k player with bronze vs all golds and a diamond. I’m willing to wait for better, closer match ups. I get that’s part of the draw for comp over QP but some of the QP match ups are just bizarre.
I also want to see a forced 2-2-2 mode as a test run, even if it’s just in arcade. I really want to see how it work out.

Make it random for everyone so not everyone gets the same task at the same time. Done.
Everyone keeps bringing up this argument, but disregards that this is how QP already IS even without daily quests. There is no real objective in QP other than to win, but winning is not good enough of an incentive for many people so nobody cares. Daily quests could potentially get some people to try harder instead of maining Widow/Hanzo all day long. You can’t make it worse at this point.
Something else that could potentially help would be a “Mercenary” option you can enable. In which you become a freelancer for your team and they can vote you to play anything they want. Would take away your freedom of choice but could reward you with sweet bonus exp.

You say there no real objective in QP and that the only one is winning, but no one cares about winning. You know what would encourage people to win? Lootboxes rewards, just like in arcade.
And the reason why daily quests that involve specific characters are bad is because:
- More people would leave games if someone already is playing the character they need to do a daily on.
- Character specific dailies, such as hack 20 people, or something like that would just make people focus more on hacking off cooldown than actually playing the objective to progress the game forward (and no, hacking off cooldown isn’t always going to benefit towards the win).
- What if everyone in the group has a daily to play a dps hero? Hey look at that, you are now encouraging most of the team to play roles for their own sake and not the sake of winning.
These would make QP worst than it already is.
All of these can be worked around. Instead of giving everyone one static character specific quest, you could make it so that you get one for every (or at least a multitude of) character so you can choose which ones to complete. Of course, if it ends up being a QP staple hero, nothing will really change, however.
We could also curb up the consecutive match bonus exp so it becomes more attractive to stay rather than leave. If necessary, we could take away from the win exp since nobody cares anyway.
However, in the end, nothing will really motivate people long term. Exp is only good for loot boxes and loot boxes only become relevant if:
-You are still low level and thirsty for cosmetics
-There is an event going on.
Any other time, you won’t really give a damn about boxes. I know I don’t.
Blizz would have to actually give us an interesting progression system instead of this loot box one, but that’s where all the money comes from, so that ain’t gonna happen.
Adding in lootboxes would provide for faster and more obvious rewards to the playerbase than simply bumping up the exp increase. Adding lootboxes to wins is basically the same as exp=lootboxes in the end, except lootboxes are just more flashy and and reward the player immediately.
Or something as simple as win a Quickplay or competitive match as a Tank, Healer and Damage.

yeah but reward you with what? 200+ levels in and you don’t really give a damn about them anymore. You just get them and open them up for the four duplicates you get so you can buy the stuff you miss during events. There is nothing exciting about them.
It might be just me, but I sure as hell don’t even obsess about doing my weekly arcade boxes when there is no event going on. Heck, I hardly even play outside of events anymore.
Well doing farming lootboxes is still good because it means you’ll get more dups to get currency to buy the items you want during the events.
Besides, Overwatch only has cosmetics to offer. There is no meaningful progression Overwatch can offer besides other cosmetics.
This would have a new set of problems.
Lets say I did all my challenges and I have only 1 left, which is something like hack 20 heroes. All I would be doing is hacking instead of playing properly.
There also would be more people asking to play a specific hero and there would be more arguing. I might imagine that team comps could get even worse in some situations.
You could somewhat fix it if those challenges only work if you win, but I still think it would just make things worse and people more toxic.
edit: seems like some of my points were mentioned before, sorry for not reading all posts earlier

Which is my main gripe with it since day one. They actually used to have a real progression system in place before they changed it into a loot box system and I am still bitter about that.
Sure, boxes filled with cosmetics get the kids all excited, but I, on the other hand, am just looking at them and go “meh.”
There is nothing to really achieve in this game, so nobody ever cares about anything. If comp didn’t have golden weapons, nobody would even want to win in there either.
But that’s just my opinion.
I mean, I respect your opinion and everything, but I’m so so glad that Overwatch doesn’t have a pointless progression system that is only there to gate off content from day 1. I don’t see the purpose of having progressions in pvp games that keep me from playing with the best guns or addons that fit my game style. If I wanted a sense of progression, I’ll get it from mastering the game and improving, not arbitrarily getting better by unlocking items to improve my gameplay. You shouldn’t have to have a progression bar or item to get you to play, you should just be motivated by the idea of improving as a way of progressing your skill and rank in the game.
To make quickplay fun again, you just have to remove certain heroes like Widowmaker, Genji, Hanzo from the selection screen.
Easy.
I have reached my personal skill ceiling in this game long ago. I have played every hero as much as I wanted, have had my mains, have seen every map countless times.
For me, there is nothing to actually do anymore. Sure, I could just go and farm cp until I have all golden guns, but I don’t even feel like doing that anymore. Daily challenges/quests were something that sparked my interest since it would actually give me an objective. Something I could try to achieve in this game. But no one ever seems to like the idea, so I guess it won’t happen. Pity.
It’s kinda sad how little fun I have playing this game given how excited I was about it ever since the reveal trailer. Now I just boot it up whenever there is an event going on to farm some boxes I don’t even particularly care about.
Sometimes I ask myself why I even do that anymore and the answer is that I really want to love the game, but there currently is nothing or at least very few things to love.
And that saddens me. Maybe my expectations were too high from the start.

It sounds like you need to just stop playing for a while until you have a urge to play just for the fun of it. Thats how I am right now. i usually only log on to play a few rounds of qp, comp, or to mostly play with my friends. Having people to play with is also a big factor to liking this game, especially since it’s so team focused.
