I’m a NZer, and we don’t have a lot of religion going on in our country at all.
I’m older, and maybe wiser though. You can have your own thoughts on things, and go do your own stuff, without pushing people away.
People use the “I am an independent thinker” to excuse themselves from some pretty awful behavior.
You can be super weird, bright, different etc, and still have a lot of friends. They are not exclusive things, they are on different axis.
