I don’t play a ton of Comp, I’m gold 5 on DPS, peak gold 1 from the last season I played before this one during overwatch 2. Overwatch 1 I was high gold - plat. (Played a bit more comp in overwatch 1) I Only have a few hours in comp over both Ow 1 and 2. I’ll do my placements maybe once every 2-3 seasons but that’s about it. Because of this how much Comp should you actually play to get an accurate or mostly accurate rank?
I want to play comp mainly and not nearly as much QP in Season 9 because that’s when we’ll get all the changes to comp. Because of this I want to try to get a more accurate rank in season 8 despite the soft reset going into season 9 and want an idea of just how much comp I should play in a season.
Along with all this Comp in my opinion just feels bad to play for me. I’m not sure why but when I play QP I can go game after game after game, for Comp however. I usually play one game, win or loss and instantly want to get off even if that one comp game I did super good and we won easily. I’m not sure why but it just feels bad playing comp for me with no specific reason. I think the other players do fine, I think I do fine, I don’t get flamed or anyone being toxic. I will get someone throwing here or there but I don’t play much comp so it’s not often. Along with that I rarely ever leave games, so wanting to leave because the game isn’t going right almost never comes to mind for me.
Does anyone have any ways they get them self to play comp more then QP? Because I truly do want to play comp and climb, It doesn’t feel like I’m hard stuck gold or anything. I just can’t get my self to play comp for more then a game or two without wanting to get off.
Tbf it’s about what motivates you to play competitive I guess.
- is it for the golden weapon?
- is it the satisfaction for ranking up?
- or any other reason?
For me it’s the first reason, getting golden weapon for my main, and since I got what I wanted, I didn’t have motivation to play competitive anymore
Plus I like quick games and don’t want to stay too long in a game that is clearly a lopsided waste of time, or teammates harrassing you coupled with blizzard refusing to take action despite me reporting them.
For accurate representation of your rank, I would say keep playing until you start seeing many losses if you have been getting win streak, or start seeing many wins if you have been getting losing streak.
You can constantly play quick play games because you got nothing to lose, but you stop playing after a single loss in comp because you just lost some skill rating. It’s a psychological thing which I guess is normal. Honestly I would advice waiting till the new competitive system comes before starting the grind, because the current system isn’t great.
Sounds like you’re putting comp on a pedistal. If you’re gm or higher that makes sense, but since you’re below that you don’t really need to worry about it like that.
Some people just don’t like comp and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. I find myself getting frustrated when multiple people leave repeatedly in QP games. I feel like I’m wasting my time there playing with partial teams as well as knowing the ranks in the game are all over the place.

Yeah, I’ll just wait for season 9. I normally don’t leave my QP games even unless I have to leave or I accidently Q in which case I leave almost instantly after saying sorry, and I don’t mind losing games even. I just for some reason can’t force myself to play comp despite treating my comp and QP games super similar almost the same. Minus comms of course. I mean maybe it’s just knowing its comp, because If I played QP without knowing I’m playing comp I probably could play a ton. Even the few times my friend will duo with me, without vc. Even then I can play a lot of Comp games in a row. It’s just solo Qing comp that makes me not want to play comp even tho when I’m not solo Qing comp, I solo Q QP and treat it the exact same way as comp lmao.
Speaking of the new comp system however, I watched the blizzcon stream but do you know, are they adding the thing where you don’t just lose comp points if you lose a game? Because I think I remember them mentioning how it feels bad to lose a game even if you did a really good job that match, and so they want to implement a thing so if you do super good but someone throws your game, you don’t get punished for it and only lose mmr or something. I don’t remember the full details I think I heard of this a month or two ago. Because I remember hearing about that and being glad about it. I hope they include it, if not that’s fine given all the upcoming changes sound really good.

Most of my hours are in Competitive…
Maybe your issue with Competitive is longer matches?

I get the same feeling as well. There is just something about comp that can make it seem more tedious and harder to play. However, I try to give myself motivation by duo-ing with a friend or just treating comp as I would treat QP.
True, there are differences, and comp can be sweatier, but if you have the right mindset and the right friends it can be a much more enjoyable experience.

I mean I still leave quick play games, I think it’s fine as long as it’s a valid reason. For example, I mainly leave QP games if teammates flaming me or clearly a lopsided game, and that is speaking from someone who is ok with the new penalty system. Hopefully the next game I join is better. You don’t get the same benefit in competitive, so you are stuck with a miserable match until the match ends, which is twice the length of a QP game.
I would suggest not forcing yourself to play competitive, especially solo queue. I tried it in Season 6 because I was trying to grind for Doomfist’s golden weapon, it was miserable. Especially so if you had leavers in your team, toxic players, or clearly a stomp game. Playing it once a while is fine I supposed. But if you find yourself starting to get upset then stop playing competitive for that day, or at least take a bit of break to dodge queue.
As for the blizzcon thing, I am not sure if Performance-based skill rating is still in the game, but at least in OW1 they had it for Platinum and below. So if you did well but you lost, you lose less skill rating.

Treat it as QP with extra around for 40% of the time. Otherwise, its just tighter match making. Dont think too much about it. Have fun.

Maybe? But I play QP for long periods of time and sometimes get annoyed how quickly the games end sometimes.
