How To Find a Team

A lot of people are sick of the toxicity and randomness of Ranked and would rather play with a dedicated group who works together. These teams either play ranked together or, more likely, play in scrims with other teams at their level. Right now, there are a lot of teams looking for good dependable players. To get on a team, ideally you should:

  • be reliable (can play the same time every week, typically 2-3 times)
  • be vocal - able to communicate (in English in EU usually)
  • be a team player (not off chasing kills while your team dies)
  • be able to play several roles in one class (e.g., as off tank, you aren’t a one trick Roadhog but can play Zarya and Dva well).

Teams usually recruit by class and need you to play several heroes in that class:

Main Tank (MT): Rein, Winston, Orisa
Off Tank (OT): Zarya, Dva, Roadhog
Main Heal (MH): Mercy, Moira, Ana (sometimes Lucio)
Off Heal/Flex Heal (OH/FH): Zen (sometimes Ana, Brig, Lucio)
Hitscan DPS: Tracer, Soldier, Widow, Reaper (sometimes Brigitte)
Projectile DPS: Genji, Hanzo, Pharah

So how do you get on a team? First you find a team looking for your hero class and in your SR range (you really need an SR from comp first). The best places to find a team right now:

  • Reddit Overwatch “Looking For Team” (LFT).
  • Discord channels such as Scrim Central, ESL Gaming, and Reddit Overwatch’s Discord. To get an invite to these, you can search online or post here and someone can get you an invite. They welcome everyone.

If you are 4K or higher, you fall into a special class and have options such as The O.W. Discord.

Nearly all teams use Discord to communicate with their team, so it’s a good idea to download that free program and get familiar with it. When you trial, remember to be honest about your skills, on time, and friendly. No team wants a toxic jerk, no matter how good. Those that take on toxic jerks rarely stay together long.

There are many teams looking for members right now. This is for ALL levels, with Platinum and Diamond having the most openings. You can also start your own team but I recommend being on a team first so you see what is needed to make a strong team that survives and thrives.

Many teams have a manager who arranges teams for you to play (scrim), takes care of finding subs for those who are out that night, and makes sure the teams are taken care of. As well, several have coaches who help out with analyzing vods and giving recommendations on how to improve personal skills as well as the team’s play/strategies/compositions.

Of note is that due to different ways of looking at the game, many teams do require a16 or 18+ minimum age. This does not mean that anyone under 16 cannot play well; rather, it’s that older players tend to communicate differently than younger and it often causes severe communication problems.

I am writing this because I manage 6 teams and have several openings always between the teams. I see a LOT of postings looking for teammates from various teams so there are plenty of positions out there for those that don’t even know this resource exists. Each team has its own personality and you are trialing a team as much as they are trialing you - to see if you are a good fit and would be happy there.

If I can answer any questions about finding a team, let me know here in reply rather than DM.

A good idea but unfortunately most scrims require everyone to have a microphone whether or not it’s needed for the particular heroes they play. With the lack of an in-depth voice line menu, like in Paladins, it makes the microphone requirement even more of an issue for some players who are incapable of using a microphone effectively or at all.

I can’t honestly wait for ‘looking for group’ though, it should open up opportunities to easily find groups with some players who have microphones and some who don’t, but still work fine as a team/group.

The Looking for Game feature is for temporary, ad hoc match ups. There’s no real way to develop synergy and teamwork that way. Especially since there is no ‘trial’ to see how everyone works together.

And yes, having a microphone is needed - that’s why I put that communication is needed in order to be on a team. ALL heroes require the use of a microphone since you call out enemy team positions, their cooldowns used, etc. It’s a huge liability for a team if one member cannot and will not communicate.

That first reply hit me so hard this was a necro lol
