How to deal with toxic players

I’m on the edge of giving up this game right now. I know I should be stronger but it’s so hard.
I’m a support main in mid-plat. I have if not great, fair stats that deserve to be in this rank. And I’ve been receiving much more compliments than abusive comments, but sometimes one toxic game ruins it all.
The worst one starts with racist comment towards me, and abusive chat all game long.
The most recent one is yesterday, when our phara died right out side of starting point while I’m 30 meters ahead of him trying to heal the tanks. He flamed me throughout the entire game for things that aren’t even my fault.
The most absurd one is when I first started on the US server. The enemy team player decided to pick someone (me) to flame upon so that I would rage quit and they’d have an easy win.
These are merely 3 representative example in countless bad experiences I’ve had. I wonder do these people care about the harms they’ve done? At the worst times I actually feel physically and psychologically painful playing this game and I wish there is better substitute so that I could quit this game.
But still, back to the topic. I enjoy solo que because I have more wins that way. But I noticed that the toxic players often que in stacks and if one of them is flaming, the others are NEVER helpful. Also, English is not my first language, though I’m entirely capable of providing efficient call out during the games, I get frustrated and nervous when arguing and I just can’t win. I feel entirely vulnerable.
I’ve tried muting, blocking, reporting, avoiding, and I’ve tried not letting them get time. But it’s just so hard and there is no end to it. I’m honestly grateful for every nice and kind teammate I meet because they are the only thing that’s balancing my experience in this game. Can anyone provide some advice to dealing with my situation:(
Thank you for any suggestions

Either mute individual people the second they say anything remotely toxic. Or don’t join voice chat at all. Or do as Sadiztix said and join but turn volume to 0 (so people think you are in but you really aren’t).

Communication is really not needed at all to play OW, even up to GM.

Define toxic, because the term is pretty vague at this point. If it’s bigotry or racism. Report and mute. If it’s a thrower…avoid as team mate. If it’s the blame game. Well you mute them…tell them to chill or you block them…but I’ll be honest…I’ve been called toxic for the dumbest things. I don’t like the word toxic…because it means absolutely nothing to me… bigotry, harrasment, racism…those are clearly defined terms. If a tank is asking you to heal instead of dps, if a team needs you to play a hero that deals with a problem …or if you he hero you are playing isn’t working and you refuse to cooperate with your team…u cannot defend your actions with a vague term like toxic. If you choose to play a role, you should play that role effectively or communicate with your team of the problems you’re having. It’s not black and white.

report\mute\block\avoid as teammate

For a better chance at results, the report should have some details on what occurred

On xbox there are two ways to report, and you should use both

In s13 i got one toxic player on my team while comp. Most of the games i played team was communicating and trying their best. It was fun and if we lost we knew we tried our best and it wasen’t enough. S14 have been quite opposite. Players flame each others and blame all but themselfs. What the frak happened??

Your experience is pretty common, but a tip if I may:
Whereas team chat can help you win matches, match chat won’t.

Just keep match chat blocked.

bigotry, harrasment, racism…
These aren’t well defined at all, what are you on about?

The most toxic players I see are running on below lv100 accounts. It means they benefit from playing on a “throwaway” account, if they get banned who cares, discount OW will be a thing for as long as the game remains relevant. The only thing you can do is mute / block / report. If they’re above lv100, with a few stars, or a colored border, then most likely it’s their “main”, and most of these people can be reasoned with.

Just ignore, block, avoid, report. Don’t even bother responding. Not worth it, especially if their gameplan is to elicit a reportable response from you.

I’ve uninstalled this game. I had a final straw with toxic players messaging me with harrassment and the report system does nothing. I hate overwatch now and I’m actively looking into the negligence of the reporting system is during the pandemic. The toxic behavior seems worse than ever before and I’ve been playing on blizzard games as early as 2005. This is a first I feel rage about the toxic behavior when I’m attempting to have fun on a video game. I hope others join in some sort of movement to hold blizzard accountable for a relaxed reporting system.

Why do you care about toxic morons? If i have toxic people in my games i make fun of them or just listen their ranting for my entertainment.

If you cant deal with them, just mute them.

Omg another damn topic resurrection…

Call 911 or the mafia to break their knees.

What exactly do you want us to say? You can Mute, Block, Report and even Avoid the player(s).
