How to deal with Genji

All of genji’s controversy boils down to pure ignorance, whether intentional or not. He’s an honest character but is very unique. Here’s a thought for you genji haters out there…have you ever thought to actually learn the matchup and interactions? Genji isn’t a basic design and this overwhelms a lot of players. There are small interactions for every hero that you need to learn and implement. He’s not as basic as 76 or tracer in terms of straightforward counterplay. There’s a lot to learn, but calling genji a stupid design or “its good that he’s bad” shows that you really just biased and uneducated. Double jump, deflect, and dash reset, and dragonbade can be shut down providing you learn how to properly deal with them.

There’s a reason why almost every mid-high level player thinks genji is extremely healthy. They understand and come to appreciate a hero like genji’s adaptive and engaging interactions, and get bored of simple heroes like mcree or orisa, who don’t really offer a ton of variability.

Now as a pretty high level genji player myself, who just wants to see him viable, i want to offer you some tips with my experience. Name a hero who you struggle against genji with, and ill give you tips to help you deal with him effectively. I’ll respond to whoever i can and try to help you learn how to play against the ninja man.

OOOO a RUSTINPEACE post. My personal favorite.

I struggle with genji against genji. Ok but for real, im not kidding, the hardest matchup for me when im against a genji is literally a mirror match. Idk why… :joy:. Genji v Genji is legit my worst matchup. Either way, imma just sit here :3.

Genji v genji is about who can force more cds. You almost never want to brute force a 1v1 senario, because a smart player will just dash away to their team and you’re stuck with nothing. More often than not, a genji 1v1 is a waste of time.

Remember that dash can go through deflect, and you can do a lot to genji during blade to kill him. A good genji can’t blade you, since deflect stalls out 2 seconds and you have dash. Use that window to assist your team in dealing with him.

i believe this is the one thing i typically struggle here. Just tunnel visioning the minute i see a genji near me. Often times now i just play passively and wait for the genji to come towards me. often works. i typically play passively/pounce type of genji where i strike when i see an opportunity rather than brute force and aggressively. but for some reason, when its against a genji, its brute force with him… guess its just something to fix for on my end lol.

But often not, i just have to remember to go back to my old playstyle. it usually goes all over the place when its against a genji, but everybody else its just fine LOL.

take a break

no :slightly_smiling_face:.

since youre here, why dont you listen to RUSTINPEACE considering how you think genji is this op broken monster that youre “supposely having so much trouble with.” surely you need this a lot more than most of the people in the forums

this is probably ego around trying to be the better player. I used to have the same problem so don’t worry about it. Your both on the same heroes, so you want to be the more valuable. It’s just a bad habit.

Remember, the genji who support will always get more value than the one who doesn’t get any, no matter if your better or not.

How about Ashe? :relieved:

Back when I was supporting, I always struggled against him as Zen or Mercy.

With Zen it was if I missed the right click it was over, and with Mercy, it was bailing out got me killed by, well usually Widow during the GA. Trying to stand my ground was right out.

As Sombra / Mei / S76 etc, Genji isn’t a problem.

But as a support, He absolutely wasn’t what I would call an easy matchup. Usually if I am supporting these days, I just switch to Moira the moment I see him, and protect my other support from him.

But pre Moira he was pretty painful.

but they won’t though. For every second they’re on the forums, they could start a genji practice workshop or go into ffa to practice against genji. But belittling genji players and talking nonsense is a better use of time. Some want to learn, many will be too stubborn.

I sometimes wonder if thats the case. I guess im too afraid to lose against the genji on the other team in fear of what my team or other team would do and it gives me that “I MUST NOT LOSE TO YOU” type of attitude and i end up developing a playstyle i typically dont do against the genji mirror match.

However i do notice times when i dont lose my cool against a genji where i just wait for him to come to my team and then help support my supports (no pun intended) whenever he tries to dive on them. Usually works better in that regard to play the passive/pounce type of genji in that scenario.

I feel like if genji was ever an issue

He stopped being one when moira was released

genji was never an issue besides 2016 before nerfs and June 2020 genji. everywhere else he was either fine (2016 nerfs-2017) and underpowered (2018-current besides 2020 genji)

Yeah, I think that was by design. But, still, I wouldn’t Zen into a Genji at least in lower ranked games, same as into Doomfist. Diamond+ then Genij typically gets monstered by the rest of your team if you can make the fight take long enough, but, for low / mid ranks, the peel isn’t there, so it is good to know what to do.

Like, I feel the answer there is just switch, but I’m always interested in what people who main a hero say is a good response when you are trying to play against them on heroes you feel don’t have a fair fight.

So I’m keen to hear this, you know, learn a thing.

Ahhhh this one is good. Ashe can make genji her actual ninja pet (the female dog kind) if she plays it right. Remember that coachgun is your friend. The more distance you create with genji, the better. At midrange genji doesn’t do anything where as you do a lot. Try to eat the first burst of damage when he dashes, and he will always try to deflect. At that point, coach the ground so you dont hit genji, but also high enough where you go backwards not up. Then, throw your dynamite to enough to the side and blow it up. He will eat a free 160 damage and lose almost all his health overtime. Also, think about where your team is and back up towards them. If genji dashes, and hes burning. He has no escape and at worst will trade with you. Try not to panic with this one. It just takes practice.

Isn’t mcree like the most popular DPS hero.

Thank you! Very detailed and informative! I really appreciate it. :sparkling_heart:

I really like Genjis design. At first going against an experienced Genji player feels impossible (and lets me honest his entire kit is annoying) but most heroes can deal with him once they understand how exploitable he is.

In a way Genji is a skill check to climb for most of the roster. Cant deal with Genji? Well, you’re never going to pass diamond.

He should get a buff though. Preferably to a part of his kit that wont increase his power in lower ranks too much.

Mercy wants to bait dash and ga after. If genji dashes, IMMEDIATELY ga and he dies every time. You will be too far away and he i left with 0 escape. Also, super jump makes blade nearly useless. Learn the super jump tech and get max height.

You can also bait blade with valk, If genji dashes after blade (preferably not nano because its more risky) then valk and immediately hold space (or x/a console) and ga at the same time to your nearest target. This will again bait dash, and make genji a sitting duck with no resets.

As for zen, dont actually right click against genji. Its better to left click to try and bait deflect, as it’s less comital and risky then potentially one shoting yourself. Make sure that while he’s deflecting, you take that time to discord him, and charge your rightclick. This isn’t as powerful now that genji can cancel deflect, but it’s still optimal. This is a skill matchup either way.

Actually wouldn’t recommend this. Play what you’re best at and learn the matchup. Every support can counter genji, you just have to play it right. Zen is the hardest though where as moira is the easiest. Still, she’s very situational outside of her maps, so picking her on like Gibraltar just to deal with genji probably isn’t the play.

Ok how do I deal with point blank Genji?

:smiling_imp: they evolved and now are getting really good at countering Moira by closing the space

(fade has 100% been used at this point)
