How to counter Mei?

I see Mei in almost every match i play, mostly when the enemy team is about to lose, and they need a quick comeback.
I know i can’t fight against her well as D.va, any specific characters that can counter her?
(Mei is a literall D.va counter), and facing her as Rein is just a nightmare.

Try staying out of her efective range or have a hero like reaper that can melt her fast. Or OSK here.
And yes all tanks are rather weak against mei with exception of RH who coud kill her faster then she freezes him.

She has some counters. Orisa/Zarya are good tanks to deal with her.

-Junk, Reaper, Doomfist, Pharah, Snipers

The biggest thing is don’t put yourself in a position where you can be walled off. Also when you see she used her wall that is an opening to push in.

I wrote this for a different thread, but it might help you as well:

Here are some of her weaknesses and drawbacks:
  • Freeze?
    • It isn’t instant. It takes 30 ticks (1.5 seconds or more) to freeze an enemy. This allows counterplay.
In those 1.5 seconds (or more) can the enemy rely on:
      • Mobility (which most heroes has)
      • CC (counter slow CC with fast CC)
      • Invulnerability abilities
      • Raw damage
      • Blocking it with a shield
    • It’s a slow projectile based spray. This means you are predicting the way they enemy are moving instead of aiming with your crosshair on the enemy.
    • It only affect base movement. Mobility abilities aren’t affected.
    • It’s a debuff. It can be cleansed by Zarya and by invulnerability abilities.
  • Icicles?
    • It’s a projectile. Because of this does it has travel time.
    • It has a cast time giving Mei a very slow fire rate.
    • And yes, it has a hitbox, but I consider this a tradeoff for the 2 weaknesses written above.
  • Ice-Wall?
    • It’s a double edged sword. It can protect your team, but also harm your team. It is this ability that seperate a good Mei player from a bad Mei player.
    • Mobile heroes can ignore it.
  • Cryo-Freeze?
    • It has favor the shooter. This allow Mei to be stunned and killed in the first few frames of the ability.
    • It also allows enemies to camp near you. It’s often a dead sentence for Mei if she used this ability in a fight. This is why this ability is better to used for baiting abilities.
But as I mentioned above, it use favor the shooter.
    • Yes, it has healing. This is a tradeoff compared to other invulnerability abilities. Reaper’s invulnerability ability has auto reload and Moira’s invulnerability ability has invisibility.
  • Ultimate?
    • It has a long cast time. The longest of all projectile ultimates to be honest. This means it’s easy to interrupt.
    • It freeze slow and give enemies a chance to escape it, even without mobility abilities. This is why it’s a zoning ultimate and not a damaging ultimate.

Dealing with enemies who are better at range attacks or more than 1 enemy can mess big time as well.

And her counters or heroes who can mess with Mei:
  • Snipers who can oneshot Mei:
    • Hanzo
    • Widowmaker
  • Heroes with burst damage:
    • Reaper
  • Heroes with splash damage:
    • Junkrat
    • pharah
  • Heroes with great mobility:
    • Doomfist
    • Tracer can be effective as well, but Tracer can be one shorted by Mei. Keep dodging Mei’s freeze by blinking and keep emptying your clips in Mei.
  • Tanks who can mess with Mei:
    • Zarya (cleanse with bubbles)
    • Orisa (fortify)
  • Teammates with knockbacks (the worst):
    • Friendly Lucio.
    • Friendly Junkrats.

Use this information in your advantage.
Good luck.

nothing for a tank, zarya might be good. but for last fight or overtime. bad choice since u need her charged up.

u need to depend on your dps to deal with her. thats why shes really good in low ranks.

Zarya+Orisa combo is straight up cancer to Mei. A good duo can protect there team from freeze easy.

As Orisa I find being aggressive on a Mei is key (don’t get walled off though). If she is trying to freeze u or ur team get right in her face. take a few ticks of freeze beam before you use fortify though. You can throw ur shield between her and a frozen target or use Halt to force her to miss a headshot on a frozen target.

Edit: Hog is also really good too but it’s a double edge sword. If you can land your alternate fire she can’t get close and hooking her at about 75% hp is a sure kill on her large model. Whole Hog also breaks her wall easy in an emergency or if she trying to stick a potatoe in the tailpipe of ur team push.

When you play hamster you need to play like batman, and stay up high looking for people not covered by Mei. This means for the most part you can’t randomly roll through the enemy team without context.

Also just being willing to fire at her and not panic is really handy. It might bait her iceblock or might end with her actually dieing. Assuming you are not a squishy character caught off guard, and can actually aim decently.

Zarya bubbles cleanse the freeze. I normally take her to buy the DPS more time.

Zarya isnt a hard counter, but her util can really make life harder for Mei.

Also D.Va can soft counter Meis ult at least.

The problem with Dva is that she is an ult battery for Mei.

It doesn’t just buy time, they can outright delete Mei (depending on who ur saving I guess)

As a Mei player (pretty much the only dps I play regularly) having ur would be victim not only unfrozen a few M from you but protected by a 200h barrier is terrifying.

I totally wasn’t going to stick this icicle in your head Hanzo! I swear!..We cool?

I play a ton of Mei and you’re right, Dva is likely my easiest target. So you’ll struggle against her even with a perfect engagement.

With that being said, as Dva, you’re only option is to keep distance and wait for her iceblock to be on cool down. Save your missles, once you see iceblock on cooldown, dive. You’ll kill her outright or at least make her disengage and back off. Fair warning though, good Mei’s use iceblock to bait alot. I often iceblock early, then wall IN the enemies who dive and my team mops them up.

And remind yourself, as a tank you have the health to guarantee you’ll live thru the first engagement, so don’t panic and just be strategic. I rarely if ever solo kill a tank at full health unless they’re foolish enough to keep after me without support. And even then it will always take 2+ combo cycles.

Beyond that, enlist the help of teammates or switch to anything but Dva. Rhein can be tough with his shield and dps. Hammond, Roadhog and Zarya are harder to kill then Dva, but are also 0 threat.

Most Meis typically start saving their cooldowns once I get the better of them once. It pretty much just stalls the game out.

Your job as Dva vs Mei is to run past the choke to bait her wall and then fly back to your team immediately after hearing it go up. Alternatively, if Sym places TP through the choke, ice wall becomes useless.

Orisa and Zarya are also very strong against Mei and can mitigate a lot of what she does, Zarya in particular. If the Mei is good with their right click, I feel Pharah can actually be a bad pick against her. I’m not a great Mei but tend to have very little trouble sniping a Pharah as her.

Genji and Tracer can both maneuver and pick at her outside of her range. I’d say Tracer stands a better chance as she has better burst and can kill her via pulsebomb for free if you time it properly vs her iceblock. However, as you likely know, Mei can oneshot Tracer. There’s also Hanzo and Widow, with Hanzo in particular being able to just E her to death. If you can’t outsnipe her as Widow, Flashbang McRightclick can deal with her more easily.

Support wise, Lucio is good for ruining her kill on a frozen target, Moira never has to be near her, can always run from her, and more often than not even if she freezes you, the healing orb will usually put you above 150hp before she can headshot you. Her large hitbox is also very easy to hit for Zen, and discord shreds her.

Mei’s the one that makes me want to switch off my Tank, but Orisa still does well for holding her off for an extra couple of seconds for your team to shoot her.

Also at 2:56 “Oh my god! I fumbled the shield!” 2:57 “Thank god she fumbled the icewall! I’m outta here.”

But when the team still can’t handle her, i switch to Sombra. I’m not tanking if i’m always frozen anyway.

PS: Please have the dev’s make it so i can land a shield on the blizzardword payloads back bumper, the payloads shape makes it really tricky to put a shield on it.

Junkrat, Hanzo, Zarya, Lucio. Orisa isn’t bad either.

Don’t reaper into Mei, she can freeze him at her engagement range which is longer than his one.

Mei counters Reaper pretty well.

Around what rank? Low, you can use Pharah. Higher up, Hanzo, Ashe, Widow, McCree…

A decent tracer will make Mei ragequit unless she deathballs up. Just manage your blinks and recall, keep spamming her.

Same for Junkrat, though she can spike his brain easier.

I’ve saved other players from that lethal icicle headshot by using D.vas Defense Matrix, at the end of the day you have to think ‘teamwork is the way to take down mei’, many people say mei counters hammond, he can be frozen sure but he can curl into a ball and deny her his critical hitbox, so you’re essentially tanking mei AND doing your job for your team.
