How to counter Genji

Hi forum dwellers, I see a lot of you have trouble with Genji. I have ~90 hours on Genji, and I have some ways of countering him!
Genji’s playstyle thrives upon bad positioning, similar to Roadhog. By positioning yourself with the team and having a couple of counterstrats against him, he won’t be a problem.

As support, there isn’t too much you can do against Genji. However, there are a few things:

  • Stay with your team, if you’re grouped up. If you’re behind a shield or with people that can easily shoot him down when he dashes in, a smart player won’t take the risk.
  • If you have a mic, for the love of Jeff, please call out when a Genji is behind your team. Most competent players will hear you scream “GENJI BEHIND” and turn around to shoot his face.
  • When Genji inevitably dives on you, walk TOWARDS your team, and not AWAY. Genji will try to section you off from the rest of your team, making you an easy target. If anything, try to hide yourself in the rest of your team, so that they will at least notice him and try to kill him.

As a tank, the way to combat Genji is to deny him space. You can do this by:

  • Staying in the front of your team, as well as protecting those behind you. It’s difficult for Genji to dash into a Reinhardt and come out alive.
  • If he ever dives in, focus him and punish the hell out of him, quick. Next time he wants to dive, he’ll at least be a bit more apprehensive, giving your team more flexibility.

As a DPS, it’s surprisingly easy to counter Genji:

  • Just like tanking, it’s all about space with Genji. You want to keep him at a range, so he can’t headshot you with his right click and deal 150 damage. If you’re playing Soldier, McCree, Widow, Hanzo, or any mid-long range character, keep your distance.
  • Like the rest of the classes, if you are with your team and not out of position, Genji won’t be able to do much. Deny him as much space as possible, and you’ll be golden.

go winston and chase them. work is done

I’ve found Moria a great counter to Genji this season. I find he usually uses deflect out of habit and a well positioned damage orb (or healing, depending on how much health you have) and boom, he’s yours. It’s a great way of keeping your backline safe from the Genji dives.

Good tracers are still very much a pain to protect yourself against though!

Just smash him with Reinhardt’s hammer

Bait out his dash and THEN jump on him. A good Winston vs a good Genji is lots of zoning and waiting.

if you are healer getting attacked by genji called him out so your team can help. if he kills you 2 or 3 times and your team is just ignoring you then switch off.

If im healer I will say something like “ill heal but if [hero] is focusing me out and I get no help im going to switch off”

That usually does the trick when nobody wants to go healer.

As someone else said, if you still want to support but a Genji is on you, try out Moira. She’s a fantastic counter to Genji.

As both a Genji player and a support player, Genji is actually not an issue for me most of the time. If I’m on Zen and I lose a 1v1 to the enemy Genji, I usually get upset with myself and know that I could have done something better.

In comparison, if I lose a 1v1 to the enemy Tracer, it almost always leaves me wondering, “what do I do???”
