How to climb past diamond?

Ive been stuck in Diamond as a DPS player for a long time now, 4 seasons. Ive came very close to masters however i finding a trend, Games that are 3500 + average SR per team i do well in, people know their jobs. I dont have to put everything on my self like telling my team who is going to ult, or that a reaper should have his ult by now carefull.

In 3400+ games if i get 1 - 2 picks thats more then enough to win a fight which makes me play more strategic rather then chaotic trying to kill 3-4 people at the same time as make sure we dont c9 as well as cree will combo ult with sigma so i have to make sure i kill him before he does it.

However when matchmaker starts adding 2800 players with 3500+ players i feel like i have to kill 3-5 players before my tanks get to the choke or they will die in less then 5 seconds. I feel like i have no time to take a good position. My team just dies.

There is such a huge difference in how i play in high diamond / low masters compare to how i play with high plat players. In lower average diamond games, if i dont counter their dps, counter their ults, and tell my team whats about to wipe us all we lose. Its so much to worry about its exhausting…

On a good day i can land most of my shots, on an ok day i dont have the aim to simply kill everyone.

Any tips on how to overcome this? Ive seen enough streams to see how gms do it, they just dont miss shots and wipe the whole team. They make diamonds look like silver players.

I am not blaming matchmaking at all, i just want to know how to adapt, if you dont have the aim the strats is next best thing, however what are the chances of randoms listening to a DPS player that cant kill anything behind 2 shields, and if i go flank by the time i get to a good spot my team dies?

You need to be more consistent. The same as the people you are watching streams of. The reason they climb is because they are better than the players they are playing with/against. AKA:

Sounds like you’re pretty close. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Maintain a stoic unemotional communication channel. And embrace your inner zenyatta.

Jacqui,

I know what your saying, however even streamers have off days. Off days are so much more punishing on lower ranks though. I guess thats the issue.

Thanks !

honestly refining small errors consistently I believe is the way to do it for almost any game. You have all the game sense, you have all the hero knowledge, you have all the aim. Refine, review, learn to apply skills better. Nothing comes naturally, and while I haven’t put in the work for overwatch, I’ve put it in for CSGO, and RL. Global elite, and champion 3. Once you hit what feels like that “cap” it’s just about refining what you already know and as said above CONSISTENCY.

Maybe in diamond there’s more room to develop gamesense though.

i feel you. i’ve been a diamond tank for a while and play much more consistent in my 3500+ sr games (though I chalk this up to better healers, who know how to support a tanks aggression)

I think you just have to pop off on dps to hit masters, were talking at minimum the top 10% of the games population. so you have to have the strats and the aim consistently.

annoying i know but maybes it’s time to hard commit to aim training to take you to that next level.

in all honesty you reference frustrations with double shield just play doom. i have to go double shields in game a lot as a tank, you would undoubtedly get the same value playing meta heros into double shield.

but grind man. dps is probably the hardest role in the game seeing as your mechanics need to be ridiculously good to get masters. maybe less brain power but aiming is just as hard to be consistent at.

Well simply speaking, you must be good at killing people covered with shields and healers. This is true for masters and gm as well.

Id describe diamond dps player as:
1.Player with decent reaction time/aim but still far below the good level.
2.Player who relies on his non-perfect skills (Person who likes to dive alone or waste ultimate for no reason)
3.Player who in general doesnt think much. Plans? Consequences of your actions? Nah those no need for diamonds. Just press W

GM player can afford “Just press W” in diamond level thanks to superior skills, diamond player should never do that in diamond.

Hmmm.

I 100% agree with #1. #2 However i tend to always check who i can combo with, im not that player that ults while half of my team is dead. I think #3 maybe, you have to press W to climb out of gold / plat. Super aggressive because you dont get punished for it, my question is this though, if i dont hold W and wait for my team to make space, it doesnt happen.

So this is the issue i have, i need to kill 2-3 people before my tanks arrive to choke, if i dont do that we lose. So how can i not press W ?

idk I think playing meta is really important right now w double shields.

Sym-Doom-Reaper and if there is good high ground on def than Ashe. Occ Junk. Occ Hanzo

I mean i can only talk about what helped me improve and that was simply being faster. Just by watching streams i saw a similarity in all of them, people are simply faster with their camera & aim movement. Keep that in mind and just this should make you climb in no time.

I am fairly low Diamond and doubt I have what it takes to get to masters to be honest but I have heard the wise man Jayne say on multiple occasions that us Diamonds don’t know how to play with our team. Sure even in plat people know how to combo ults and press W when your rein presses W. We are also fairly decent at keeping track of what our team mates are doing most of the time but he is more referring to a micro level where your actions during a given point in a team fight are such that they synergize with one or more of your team mates. From your post it still sounds like you are more focused on your own actions in a vacuum (get picks - tell the tanks to move in) or simply try and take matters in your own hands (seek out the McCree to kill combo potential with Sigma).

I’m not going to go into more detail simply because I don’t have the knowledge but have a look at this video where Jayne describes the concept with his own words.

How to Get Out of Diamond!? - Jayne Blitz Review of Diamond Genji

Thanks guys, thanks all for the advice

Who are your dps heroes?

My rule of thumb is if you get killed 2 times in a row without making much of an impact AND you know it wasnt because you didnt make a mistake then switch hero.

Go anything else, even something unconventional like bastion.

Pretty accurate I see myself as the 2nd Player.
I always try to do the right thing even if my team disagrees which is my biggest problem.
We are all alive on defense but my team disengages and gives space? F that I am holding that space.
We won the team fight but some enemies are running to their spawn? Nope I won’t let you get away meanwhile the team on point “don’t overextend!” and let’s me 1v3.
Team stands for a good minute in choke but nothing is happening fine I will take a risky off angle.

Idk how to fix those bad habbits I can only assist people on their risky plays but if I do something risky once nobody helps me out and it’s automatically a bad play.

Review 2-3 of your vods from the previous day that you lost before you start playing. This has helped me climb from 3550-3750 in a matter of days
