for anyone who still thinks the league is doing good take a lot at the stats that can be compared:
S2: 70,077,199 hours watched in total
now: 16,079,535
video viewing numbers do not matter.
its even worse than i thought.
tokens not working most times is also a thing i guess.
Compared to the previous season, the results of Overwatch League 2020 were much more disappointing . As an example, this year’s hours watched indicator of the English-language broadcasts was 77% lower than before, while the Korean-language broadcast was 72% lower.
Viewer numbers probably would have been higher if COVID didn’t happen and the live events were still a thing. There’s just more excitement surrounding LAN games, the energy of the crowd is something you can feel even watching from home. I was actually planning to go to one of the Paris homestands, I hope that next year will bring back the live events.
I’m not surprised. YouTube streaming sucks, tokens barely work, theres no crowd, and the league itself has been ridiculously “unprofessional” this year. Entire teams switching mid season, players constantly quitting or being suspended, players not being used… like how are you supposed to get invested in a team if their roster could just all quit next week? Happened to Vancouver, and they went from being one of the best teams in the league to absolutely sucking.
Not to mention how awful league started with it’s super boring gameplay, streaming errors up the rear and no tokens.
It’s not a surprise at all to me league is failing, this season has been absolutely horrible.
3 years of OWL and the views have been only dropping.
The general public has a bad opinion about OWL or don’t even care.
(I haven’t seen other game where the majority of the community is against the esport scene of their game)
If 3 years of decline is not enough of a proof that OWL is doing bad, idk what is.
… are you actually saying that at a time when alot of people are at home watching stuff that that would REDUCE the number of viewers they normally get?
Online games are less interesting to watch compared to the live thing. Plus when they had to split the regions into NA and APAC, it just created a lot of repeat matches. If homestands hadn’t been cancelled we would have seen different matchups. Many of the APAC teams haven’t played against NA teams yet.
