How not to get focused

I feel like no matter what hero I play or what role I play I get focused. Like people will do full 180’s to look for me. Ive had it happen so much that Ive gave it a name, “The Focus Phenomena”.

I don’t know exactly what I can do to fix this considering Ive tried almost everything I can think of. Ive tried playing far back heroes, sneaky heroes, heroes that don’t pose an immediate threat! I have even tried queing with people who are way better than me and ironically people will just ignore them and go straight to me.

ANY SUGGESTIONS XD!

Maybe it is just all in your head? I have this mindset sometimes if I am super tilted

Maybe you t-bag them or call them out or something. If you get focused it’s either you are the healer or the carry of your team and you need to be shutdown.

I dont tbag and I dont do callouts. Ive only ever tbagged if they did first. I also mostly play tank roles

There’s a lot that can cause you to feel like you’re being focused. Off the top of my head:

  • Positioning, which is different for every character and with every matchup
  • Cooldown usage, for example Zarya’s who use their bubbles poorly just get focused & ran over in masters and above. Same for Ana players who waste their grenades. EZ dive targets
  • Timing. Doesn’t matter who you’re playing or what your team is playing, if you peek at the wrong time, the whole enemy team will turn to look at you. This is something most people seem to universally struggle with. You have to spend some time actively thinking about timing to get a good knack for it but it’s very rewarding.
  • How hard you commit goes hand in hand with timing. If you all-in on the enemy backline, expect 3-4 people to turn and focus you down. If you don’t commit but keep your distance, less likely people will turn on you. Bad timing & too much commitment leads to you feeling focused and feeding.
  • How many people you choose to peek. Another big one. You only have to round the corner far enough to see the 1 person you’re shooting, anything extra, more people shoot back. Leads to you feeling like they’re putting more pressure on you than you are them (which is naturally the result)
  • How threatening you are. This is a big one. Someone who doesn’t pose much of a threat is going to be walked over. If you’re playing zen and you’re not hitting headshots, you get focused. If you’re playing mccree and you’re missing flashbangs, you get focused. But if you start outright killing people when they try to aggro onto you, they stay back. It’s especially important to establish early dominance unless you plan on mind-gaming people into following you the whole round
  • And of course, low hanging fruit: confirmation bias. Are you actually being focused more than your team, or do you just notice & remember it more?

Also how you react to being focused matters a lot, too. For example, if youre playing someone like tracer, it’s okay to just do nothing. It feels wrong, but waiting behind a corner for a few seconds or even running away into the enemy spawn with two people chasing you is absolutely okay sometimes. React wrong to being focused & it feels bad. React right & it feels like you’re playing games with the enemy’s heads

People focus people they think they can kill, if you’re hanging around corners or escape routes and you can just run for it they often won’t bother because it won’t do much.

In other words, don’t hang out in the open.
