How much does Overwatch cost to run?

I mean, I must’ve poured over a 1500 hours into the game by now, which is a ridiculous amount of time for a $40 price tag. I’d say I got pretty good value out of that money.

But I don’t really buy merchandise or loot boxes or anything, and it kinda dawned on me that between hardware, server maintenance, electricity, bandwidth, support staff, new content, localization, etc., it costs Blizzard something to keep the game running the way it does.

If someone were to only play the game, how many hours of play time would they need to put in before Blizzard starts losing money on a purchase of the game?

Id say that atm Activision withholding their shares and limiting everything they do is a bigger problem than players not buying lootboxes

Well as you said, they get their money mainly from merchandise and OWL related things. If they wernt do those, and only get a 40$ per game, its less then an employe day salary so i would say they would lose money pretty fast.

OWL events and sponsors give huge amount of money so if they run base game properly, esports will keep budget stable

There is no way that anyone of us is able to tell you precise numbers. Probably not even Blizzard is able to calculate them, because there is a lot of unkown variables.

That said, I assume that if you never spent any additional money but the initial purchase and played thousands of hours, you are probably making them a minus. That’s not necessarily bad for them, because you might return your investment in another way. Like watching their streams / videos, talking about the game, spreading it and getting other people involved, that in the end buy lootboxes and merchandise.

It’s not always about the raw spendings that counts, although that looks nicer for the suit carriers.

All in all I’d say about 3 fitty?

Who knows.

I’d say at least $50 a month.

Our local free PC bang accs are charged on hour basis from cafe owners. A friend of mine runs Blizzard approved ™ PC cafe (Meaning all Activion Blizzard games are free to play) so I know from him how much they pay lol

You play Blizzard game for 1 hour in the cafe → owners has to pay $1 to Blizzard (made up number)
300 players play blizzard games for 2 hours each → 300*2= Blizzard gets $600 (Totally made up number). All this mean Blizzard makes tons of money on our region alone

I don’t think you are going to get any kind of accurate number on that, but there are far older games with less sources of revenue and no sequel on the way still up and running online. I wouldn’t be worried about OW servers shutting down any time soon due to cost.
