How Long do you Think OW2 was in development?

When I saw gameplay footage of the demo, I was expecting a game that was near completion.
But only 25% of heroes have an updated OW2 “look” so far.
The campaign only has a few missions.
No new heroes are even shown.
The UI doesn’t look finished yet either.

Now you might say, oh but IamAPerson, this is to be expected! Sequels can take a long time to make, especially if they’re doing their best to “recapture the magic” of the first game!

Yeah, except OW2 IS ONLY HALF ORIGINAL. The PVP sections of the game are the SAME as OW1. IT IS LITERALLY A REMASTER OF OW1. EVERY NEW OW2 HERO WILL ALSO BE A OW1 HERO. That’s way less work than a typical new game would require. AND WE’RE PROBABLY AT LEAST 1 YEAR AWAY FROM LAUNCH.

The only way this “sequel” could be this far behind in development is if they started working on this in 2018. (Possibly after the development of Retribution.)

Thoughts?

Wait until blizzcon 2020 because most likely it will be released for next gen consoles not on the current ones

Probably the moment they saw the positive reaction to pve. So, around Halloween 2016.

They likely already knew the limitations to the current engine. This is why Jeff told us a long time ago that the events were likely never going to change. Not just because the engine couldn’t do anything fancier, but because they were also already working on other projects like OW2 in terms of story development.

Admittedly I don’t know anything about game development but I would assume they likely already have a lot more half finished stuff in the works but the Blizzcon demo is just the most stable and player ready part.

Right after year 2, which would explain the complete lack of content right after

What OW2?

Dude, they had only 1 mission ready. That hardly takes 2 years to make.
I will hate to see how long the others will take in that case.

Nah, at the panel, they confirmed that it’s going to be released for current gen

They probabaly had to upgrade the engine which would have taken several months-I’m not an IT expert so this is just a guess, but it deffo would not be a weeklong thing. Rigorous testing, back and forth on what the capabilities needed to be. Actual concept for the story and such, pitching the idea, designing and making assets for null sector, Talon, new hero designs. Hell the cinematics take near on a year from concept to finish. This probabaly started at least 2 years ago.

Why are we assuming that none of this stuff is done, as opposed to either a) It is basically done but still in internal testing; b) They intentionally only put a tiny slice of it out for demo because they want to debut the new features/heroes/etc. in a controlled stream, rather than one big dump (and/or they want people to still have something to be surprised by when the game drops)?

I think it’s perfectly fair to be nonplussed by what you saw in the demo, but I think it’s a bit strange to act like the demo shows everything that is ever going to be in the game and/or is done already.
