How is role queue bad?

i hear 2-2-2 getting bashed is popular again thanks to sinatraa.

can someone please explain how insta lock battles are good for the majority of the playerbase please?

From many polls I’ve seen, the majority of players prefer 2-2-2. The problem is that it’s not the mass majority. About 20-30% of the playerbase dislikes role queue, and that’s a good chunk of players.

This is why I agree with those who want Open Queue as an alternative mode under the competitive tab. It’s a simple solution that makes everyone happy.

Most players like 2-2-2. The vocal minority are DPS mains that refuse to play any other role and don’t want to wait. They can flex or wait, no big deal.

people don’t really hate 2-2-2. but it clearly killed the game because of the long queue time. when echo came out i had tagged only dps and got a game after 40mins.
if i also tag support or tank. i would most likely never get to play dps.

  • 2 off tanks

  • 2 off healers

  • 2 flankers when supports/tanks are set for deathballing (as well they should)

  • Anamaker

  • Flanker-Moira

  • DPS-Hog

  • Reddit Lucio

  • Thinking locking in your one-trick hero means you don’t have to switch, ever.

  • DPS deciding they can’t handle Pharah/Echo and leaving it to Ana while they dispatch their duties as “I’m Junkrat/Reaper, they’re not my job”.

  • DPS deciding they can’t deal with Hammond and literally just ignoring him tearing the back line to pieces. HOW CAN YOU NOT NOTICE?

  • Waiting 12 minutes to play DPS when you could have finished 2 Tank matches in that time.

instalocking is all the game was before. lock dps and ego the role. if someone locks your hero somehow before you, time to throw. HOW TF IS THAT BETTER THAN ROLE QUEUE?

Role queue managed to actually make it worse, because now we have weekly Mystery Heroes in Tank and Support roles to decide what hero we’re going to play.

Play Support and it’s like 'Well, Mercy is banned, Baptiste and Zen are bad, guess I’ll play Ana then." and hero locks and whoever the other support gets literally dictates what you’re going to play.

its not bad, dpsers just make those posts while waiting in queue

yea, i don’t think it made it worse for the vast majority of players.

the game is bad because it is bad, role queue was a solid bandaid IMO.

It gave people a security blanket. I honestly have no idea if it’s stemmed losses or accelerated them, I’m just glad to have Open Queue back for now.

Okay, how is that different from people throwing games now? I’ve already seen people throw because they couldn’t lock Echo. Or people throwing because their hero is banned that week.

2-2-2 by itself isn’t bad.

However it resulted in metas featuring sleeper characters like Mei and Orisa ON TOP of a million year queue time for DPS

It’s not different, except when people throw a game for you now, you’re not straight onto the next, it’s 10+ minutes away again if you’re DPS.

That’s 25 minutes just wasted.

For the sake of a security blanket, it’s created it’s own, and exacerbated an awful lot of existing problems.

Careful, we’re not allowed to use lost creativity as an argument.

I don’t see how a majority of this list is exclusive to 2-2-2. Similar crap has always existed.

Heck… I’ll even go with your last point.

Waiting multiple 10-30m games to play a DPS hero where your team is actually working with your hero choice and not against it (meaning multiple DPS that isn’t working).

Here’s a fun pattern I noticed. If you fill roles in Open Queue. Of roughly 20 games 1-2 games would have the DPS spot open.

Open Queue is nice, but it’s only great because it actually enables succeeding with a greedy mindset.

problem isn’t with role queue per se, it’s with 2-2-2.

1-4-1 or whatever variant more accurately represents the playerbases’ preference, so that queue times are normalized across the three roles, is what’s called for.

Except it doesn’t, because in OQ we have more room to adapt to it, in RQ, you just have to suck up getting blown up by Pharah again and again, while Tracer and Genji achieve absolutely nothing.

Again, similar stuff existed, it won’t ever go away, but the punishment in RQ is far worse.

And again, it’s DPS being allowed to be greedy in RQ. No one ever considered Tanks or Supports in RQ to be greedy, so long as they don’t pick Moira or Roadhog. I spent several seasons instalocking D.Va, and people were glad of it, no one ever thought that ‘greedy’.

I guess it’s the mindset, I don’t particularly mind what I play match to match, I like to mix it up, between matches and within them, and OQ does that far more efficiently than RQ ever will. I’m not playing ‘against my choice’ when I pick a Support or Tank, I genuinely like playing them. I sure as hell don’t ‘put off’ locking in Widow when I really want to either.

You’re not confined to a state of “I must always instalock” or “I must always wait till last to fill”, there’s a huge amount of room between those places. And if you start with 4 DPS, don’t fret on it, if it works it works, if it doesn’t, people will swap because overall, people don’t generally like losing.

DPS is the most popular role and the queue times for it now have skyrocketed.

Yes, I sound impatient but ten minutes to find a game which could potentially have a leaver or could even be cancelled? No thank you.

Cause the majority of games without it are 222 or 132 anyway…and restricting what you can do is bad for the game…the queue times are an additional side effect but not the core issue

Mind you…players themselves can also restrict what you can do…and they still in fact do by not being “team oriented” and/or “demanding”/“forcing” that you play specific things/metas…that was the case before and after RQ…but now you have the devs doing it on top of this with this construct and the game suffers because of it

OW is not intended to be this rigid “do this”/“stay inside the lines” thing that we have today…and things like hero/map pools have only worsened things

The variety, flexibility, freedom, etc that identifies this game and set it apart from all the other 1st person shooters is slowly being torn apart by this trend toward restricting what you can and can’t do

Does it have benefits? Yeah…but at the cost of no longer being “OW” and also being stale and repetitive and, thanks to queue times, borderline impossible to play for some people

The game is a shell of itself thanks to past year…Sinatraa won’t be first or last casualty

It’s not like you could get another DPS game right away before, though. You’d probably get at least one game where you had to slum it on tank/support in between unless you were one of those insufferable people who would just let the team burn before they’d tank.
