How is Doomfist a Tank?

He only works in the role for situations where you want to bench your tank for a third DPS, but literally nothing about him is a Tank.

The common argument is that he can be distracting in the enemy backline, but that’s also true for Genji, Sombra, Moira, etc.

He needs something I don’t profess to know what exactly, but he sucks. He sucks when he’s on your team. He sucks when he’s on the enemy team. He’s not overpowered or underpowered, he’s mispowered.

Maybe give him more shield passive but make his hitbox bigger so we can pretend to hide behind him for the half second he is standing still between his backline and the enemy team.

Or maybe his passive applies to teammates nearby too, so at least he synergizes really well with squishy dive, or when peeling? Something.

Because they are wanting to make tanks and supports dps… give it time everything will be a dps

Tank in Overwatch generally speaking means close range damage that goes through one or all forms of defenses.

Frankly the role should have been renamed Brawler at some point. The typical archetype of MMO tank doesn’t apply.

If they wanted to break away from the Holy Trinity I agree that would be smart, because then we could break the Tank role into two distinct roles, but they don’t have the roster size to balance around that.

Distinguishing as example, Vanguard (Rein, Orisa) from Brawlers (Doom, Ball), would be a great direction to go - maybe in Overwatch 3 when they actually do some real development on this game again.

But so long as they insist on this Tank/Damage/Support holy trinity, and 1-2-2, they need to balance accordingly.

Slightly off-topic but it’s always annoyed me that Blizzard has never understood the holy trinity anyways. In EverQuest, where the term originated - it was Tank/Healer/Support - with the Support role being a Slower/Haster to the group (Bards, Shaman, Enchanters, late-game Rangers): and then 3 dedicated DPS in a group of six.

There’s nothing wrong with Brawler/DPS/Support.

It’s a semantic change from “tank”. This is a hero shooter not a RPG.

I 100% agree; every tank should be able to reduce/block damage done to their team, but Doomfist only blocks damage for himself like a Genji Deflect. I’ve thought up changes to make to OW2 Doomfist to make him a more enjoyable to play against OW1 Doomfist. Basically, they needed to remove OW1 Doom’s stun, reduce his displacement, and reduce his burst damage potential. Here’s all the changes I’d make to Tank Doom to make Doom a DPS again:

Doomfist

  • Moved from Tank to Damage Role
  • Base health reduced from 450 to 250

Power Block

  • Ability Removed

Rising Uppercut

  • OW1 Rising Uppercut Added
  • Reduce upwards travel and knock-up of Uppercut

Seismic Slam

  • Now also allows for targeting the ground mid-air to travel downward (damage ramping from OW1 would stay gone, and Doomfist keeps the OW2 verticality to his Slam)

Rocket Punch

  • No longer stuns
  • Wall impact damage removed
  • Knock-back reduced
  • Impact damage buffed (would do less than 200 impact damage)
  • Charge up time buffed

Meteor Strike

  • Slow on enemies removed
  • Outer-ring damage buffed

I’m not giving concrete numbers here because they are subject to change and need tested to see what feels good on the receiving end, but this direction would make Doomfist a healthy DPS hero finally.

By that definition 5 out 12 tanks aren’t “tanks”.

You mean 4 out of 11? There are 11 tank heroes in the game right now, and I’d say Roadhog, Wrecking Ball, Doomfist, and Orisa cannot tank for the team effectively, since they basically just tank for themselves, not the team.

Roadhog is getting a rework soon to give him the ability to protect his team, so that’s good.

Tanks don’t need to block damage fir their team, they need to just absorb damage in general. They take damage so that their team is not and the tank doesn’t die in the process.

Some then like to be cheeky and say, “well that makes Widow a tank then because she distracts hurr durr” as if they have a point. Tanks force you to pay attention and shoot at them, they cannot be ignored because they will not go away even if you damage them fiercely unlike our flankers and snipers.

Tanks take the attention of all members of the enemy team and keep it as long as possible, that is their job.

He’s a tank because frontlines and creates space.

Hear me out, what if he had a slow on his Seismic Slam that allowed for combos?

Oh wow… that’s a rarity. Someone who actually remembers the original Holy Trinity.

And usually the Holy Trinity was Warrior/Cleric/Enchanter. Yeah, balance wasn’t too great in early EQ days.

Problem here is that Brawler is DPS, not a Tank.

You would define a Brawler like Dragoon, Monk, Reaper, or Samurai in FF14.

Every Tank can block out damage. This is false.

Any damage directed toward them is better for your team. They’re capable of handling that damage and forcing them to look at them.

Correct.

He isn’t, they took a trading dps hero that didn’t resemble a tank in anyway shape or form and randomly decided to make him a tank. I’m partly convinced they did it just to say it was something “new” going into ow2.

Yes this is a problem with all tanks.

He’s a dps with the mobility of dive and sustain of a tank, basically a character developed for those who play with near zero input for high reward a bit like hanzo, junkrat and soldier 76, the game plays for him but as long as certain youtubers are happy eh.

Sounds like an Ana problem

Also he’s definitely a tank, enough time has passed and I’ve seen enough good Doomfists to say for certain that he works. He’s harder to make work than other tanks both by virtue of being hard to play combined with Ana and Sombra bullying, but he still works. Also Sombra’s bullying was weakened, so hopefully they get Ana next.

General problem, not just an Ana problem, though she is a big proponent of it.

They said they were gonna get rid of insane CC. Then they just add it back in. These devs are very smart!!!

Because he’s big and has health.

McCrack’s grenade was the only CC they added back in. Not removing Ana’s or changing it in any way was a terrible decision and she is the biggest problem in the game because of their inaction.

I agree 100% in OQ, but that’s about it. In RQ at least, he needs a significant buff to justify not just being the squishiest tank, but the fact that compared to OW1:

He lost like 70% of his damage
He lost just as much CC
The remainder got nerfed hard
And his hp is a whopping 50 higher in OQ.

Reaper, Mei, Bastion, Torbjorn, Baptiste, Moira, Brigitte, Kiriko, Illari, even Genji and Tracer make better tanks than him there.
