How is champion rank even gonna work

I am yet to understand the point in putting Champion as the new rank, very original blizzard

It is just the proverbial carrot on the stick to make top 500 players who stopped caring about top 500 encouraged to prove that they are better than the same people they are already ranked above to begin with.

The ThiccBuddha would lose charm if I was not a gold player talking down to grandmasters. It would break my character.

The point is to make unnecessary changes to claim that they are doing stuff

Think how the best players in GM1 will eventually climb to champion because the skill gap between a low and a high GM player is simply way too high for them to be in the same rank

they think it will distribute ranks better, but dont realize you need to increase skill expression to do that

As of right now, past 4.4k rating is all GM1. The new rank tier allows to split up the proverbial real estate past 4.5k rating.

My guess is it is to make the lower ranks feel good about themselves when everything shifts downwards and plat becomes the new gold.

All other things being equal, the new rank tier should have no effect on skill distribution. Expect an influx of returning players on top of the MMR reset and that may be the outcome, however. Still, the new tier is purely a cosmetic addition.

The players at the top are already lacking to a point where they get matched will lower elos so why split them even more?

They made that new rank so all owl players and top 500 players can now stream Unranked to champion on their 50 alt accounts…

They’re not getting split. Underlying the ranks as we see them – i.e., Gold1, Plat3, GM1, etc. – is the same numerical system as before. Right now, Player A with a 4401 rating is GM1 and so is someone like LHCloudy, who’s sitting 300+ rating points above. Next week, Player A will still be GM1, but Cloudy’s rank will display as Champion 3.
