How exactly does Comp treat games with leavers?

I’m usually noone who plays a whole lot of comp and I usually don’t pay much attention to the workings of the game but I was kind of under the impression that when players leave a game of comp… it then wouldn’t count anymore or end automatically.

Is it not like that anymore? And if not why??

I just had a game where our enemy team had two whole leavers 1/3 through the game, so they were just 3 people left. I said “lets stop fighting this is not fair”, but my whole team was like “mimimi but i wanna win” and I was like whatever and halfheartedly went along but honestly it felt like bullying.
We did win the game and somehow I got ranked up for that. Is this seriously how the game works? That’s insane. I’ve never felt so bad for a win before.

I think if someone leaves in the first 60 seconds or so, the game is cancelled. Someone correct me.

Pretty sure person above me is correct. Only cancels in the first min. Past that the game plays out. Leavers suck, but canceling a game whenever there is a leaver or making it so teams don’t lose SR for losses when there is a leaver would lead to people abusing the system. And rank inflation as some matches people will gain rank and no one loses any.

I don’t really play many other pvp games. Does any1 know how games like league, dota, valorant, and CS handle rank gains and losses when there is a leaver in the match?

okay I guess I get that, but isn’t it kinda of unfair to punish the normal player because some abuse the system?

Truee I would be curious about that too!

I’ve had some comp games where someone on my team afk’s off the start and gets booted, but the game doesn’t get cancelled. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with our other teammates engaging the enemy within that 60seconds? Anyone else wonder why some games don’t get cancelled?

It sucks to lose because of a leaver, but in the long term they should be on your team as often as the enemy. Actually should be statistically less assuming you don’t quit games

They do this because otherwise it gets easier to game the system by creating smurfs or playing with other players willing to leave to “take one for the team”

In the grand scheme of things, I would recommend not thinking about it as a punishment. Dont get me wrong, it’s certainly not good for you, but a number of years back I was in the same situation as you where losing SR from these types of losses upset me because i felt like it was such a setback. Heck one time I had a very embarrassing moment where I was in a comp match and someone on the enemy team quit. Soon after everyone else on the team left too so it was my team vs one guy left on the enemy team. It was an obvious win so I spent the time going through the settings menu trying to find a keybind that was bugging me. Apparently this counted as being AFK, and I got kicked and penalized. For a game that was a guaranteed win! I was definitely upset.

But when I stopped thinking about it as a punishment and realized that these types of things just happen, it ultimately didn’t matter. That one loss didn’t prevent me from hitting my peak for the season. My SR fluctuated around the point for many matches into the future, and really wasn’t a big deal.

I understand you feeling bad, but because both teams are equally as susceptible to leavers, I think most people just chalk it up to ‘part of the package’ when playing comp and deal with it.
