in observing games ive noticed that it doesnt seem to actually go off of personal performance for elims.
if another player gets a kill that you helped do damage on, it will add the elimination to your total regardless if you actually were the one to get the player
of course this is different for heals, so what exactly does the scoreboard go off of? the best performing player? it doesnt seem to fit whats actually happening in game
someone could have 32 elims but the opponents havent died that many times so where’s the number coming from?
Eliminations are essentially just “assists” from other games and your final blows put together. Assists in this game are… Actually, I have no idea. Generally you get them when healing or buffing someone who got a kill. I think.

As buddha said.
If you’ve put 1 point of dmg into someone who dies soon after, you get an elim.
It’s like this to make kill stealing impossible.
Assists happen if you’ve aided someone who gets the kill, but haven’t put a single point of dmg into the enemy yourself.
Healing, dmg boosting, speed buffs all count for assists.
Sometimes turrets also count as elims, and wrecking ball mines. Who knows why.
Elims are kills you were involved in directly. They arent killing blows
Marblr has an old video about this; should watch!
An elimination is any kill that you contributed any amount of damage to.
An assist is any kill that you did not contribute damage to, but contributed elsewise via damage boosting, speed boosting, crowd control…
This has been the case since Day 1. Many years ago Jeff did explain their decision to make it this way. Basically it boiled down to it being a team game, and specifically one where each class has a distinct role, and not everyone is equally suited to (nor should be) confirming kills.
Of course back then we didn’t even have a public scoreboard because stats in this game are just generally misleading.
Everyone who assists with a kill gets an elimination credit this has always been the case since the OG game released which is why most of the scoreboard is useless and should not be taken as a serious measure of a players performance
Assists would be if Mercy was damage boosting someone, zarya put a shield on someone while they got the kill etc. Assisting other players with their kills, if that makes sense.
