Team 1 - 5 stack of smurfs, 1 solo player
Team 2 - 2 solo players, 2 stacks of 2.
How the f is that fair? Why are we paired with 5 stacks?
I’ll wait longer k thx bye.

If you want a solo only queue you’ll be waiting upward of 2 hours, no one wants that. It only matches you with stacks if the queue gets too long, calm down.
Solo? Nah. But 5 stack of smurfs? Hell nah.
Where you got that info from? I’m pretty sure its easier to match 12 Solo Q players than it is to match mixed matches.
When matching a group in you’ll need to offset players of higher ranks but also potential advantages like comms etc.
The longer it takes, the broader the search parameters are. For instance, maybe that 5 stack looks for another 5 stack for about 2 minutes. Then the next 2 it looks for 4 stacks. Then 3, etc.
How it’s fair, is that your team’s MMR will be higher than the 5 stack, because they are grouped with 5.
The matchmaker only matches solos with stacks if the queue is already at a longer time than normal, meaning there is not enough solo players of close to the same rank queuing at the same time. Meaning if you took out the possibility of matching with stacks or people further SR away from you, queue times would increase exponentially. For matchmaking algorithms, queue times are never a matter of offsetting anything, that is done in seconds. The amount of time a matchmaker algorithm takes to find a match is defined only by the parameters set for an acceptable match, and the amount of people matching these parameters that are currently queuing. Shrinking these parameters any more would easily double or even quadruple the already increasing queue times.
the offsetting would create specific conditions, based on the size of the group and your confidence in their skill rating, that the rest of the line up would require to meet as well in order to keep the match “fair” (I’d assume).
Basically my point is that a lot of players are being ruled out due to conditions created by having a group in a match. Keep in mind that unlike solo Q, groups allow for a greater variance in skill rating in a match.
Placing 12 random players based on connections speed and SR in one of the most populated ranks (gold) shouldn be much of an issue.
Its kinda hard to believe that it is, you gotta admit that.
It is, but the implication that this is a matchmaker problem is completely unwarranted. It’s just a side effect of less people playing the game then they used to. Maybe it would be better if they just cut out the ability to 5 stack and only matched groups with other groups. But the fact remains that aside from gold, queue times for a solo only game can sometimes be upward of 5 minutes, and any other limitation imposed on the matchmaker would easily double that. I was playing just last night on this account in plat where supposedly the second largest concentration of players is, and I never had one queue that was under 4 minutes, including games with all solo players. Some of my high diamond games have pushed 8 or 9 minutes, I cant even imagine what GM must be like.
