How does stack matchmaking work

I only stack with one other person and it always seems to place me against 4 to 5 stacks which never feels fair since it’s a team constantly communicating vs only 2 people and I usual get quiet team mates, it’s frustrating honestly

They had a post about this a long time ago from Jeff Kaplan where the match making would do something like 90% of 6v6 were 6v6 and the other 10% were a mixture of stuff like 6v3-2-1 and other combinations. Pretty much saying the bulk of the time people play even team set-ups.

Blizzard has the statistics and unless people want to go and shout they are lying, then its anecdotal fallacies or whatever you wanna call it where people are fallible and you can’t trust their perception of things.

People tend to just remember the times where things go wrong far more often than anytime it went well, but for me I remember several times where I was against a stack and they just sucked because people often times play with friends at different skill levels and causes a huge mess of coordination. Worse than if you just had 6 people all at plat or something randomly put together.

They’ll also stack the cards in favour of the non-stacked team. So if you are a duo and 4 solo queuers versus a team of 6-stack or 5-stack, the average MMR of your team will actually be higher than the average MMR of the stack team. This is to counter the advantage the stack has with being grouped and possibly communicating better than the non-stacked team.

So when you see a big stack on the enemy team and no big stack on your team to balance, don’t let it psych you out! Too many people see this and just mentally give up, not even trying. Your team will have the better skilled players and you can definitely win the match!

It doesn’t in comp besides DUO queue.

That’s why many supports pay DPS players to boost in duo queue. You can’t stack 5-6 man anymore (since the korea SR abuse like 2 years ago).

Open queue however you can 6 man queue and play… but that’s not “real” ranked as most of us know.

Very poorly.

Blizzard has filed various patents on this system through the U.S. patent office and Since Jeff has Left the company they have revised it since then.

When they first came up with a match maker I was VERY impressed by it and then sometime in 2017 Q4 they completely changed it.

Players were complaining that there was “buddy stacks” of their friends that took FOREVER to make a match and rightly-so. I use to run with a group and it took FOREVER. Then it was change around the same time this game had a mass exodus of players that were the Mercy Main Casuals. So groups became SMALLER. You didn’t always have full stacks. But lots of 5s and 4s in there.

From what this looks like… So what the system does is make the group then grab then fills in the match with Solo players.

What the problem is with “stacks” (a premade team). and a “solo” (Solo Q player) is the issue with how one another is treated. A stack will always believe their fill-in player as a Solo is “dead weight” and cumbersome to the group. More or less the Match maker is actually doing its job. It believes you as the group have an advantage over the other team for being in a group. So it picks a more “under-performing” player to fill in that space. So it balances the match.

With that person being at the disadvantage and not selected for a higher skill rating is creating a Hostility. Often because the stack NEEDS to treat the other person like a member of their team. However, this falls on a SOCIAL issue and that is

A. Are you going to heal your friend first.
B. Are you going to heal that random person first.

The sad reality is. Most people in a premade team pick Option A. Because they feel they have a loyalty to their “friend” first.

The reasonable thing that Blizzard SHOULD have done is Split the Q between the two. But instead for the sake of match making time and how fast this Game is hemorrhaging players left and right. It pretty much has to go on this system now at this point.

Solo Q players are not welcome in their matches so they leave and Teamsters are mad that their Solo team mates matched with them are bad and flatout don’t want to work with anyone outside of their group. So the perpetual sinking ship , sinks.
