How does Quickplay matchmaking work?

From a casual player who only plays Quickplay, I don’t understand why I’m queued into games that have Diamond, Master ranked players or above.

Especially in midnight times, higher the chances that I bumped into Master, GM or even Top500 players. Playing with/against Top500 is rare, but Grandmaster players aren’t.

Heck, even in Quickplay Classic. I also bumped into large pre-made groups of Diamond/Master players.

I just want to relax and play the game after work, but I can’t because of the pressure of high ranked players that I felt bad if I underperform or being too eased, etc.

Overwatch is not like Team Fortress 2 or Battlefield 3 where I can pick whatever servers I like if I want to relax & play casually or want to play seriously.

Not a fan of Deathmatch modes though as I enjoy playing team-based games with objectives.

Custom games are a thing, and also I can’t speak for battlefield, but for TF2 you can only do contracts on valve servers, and Valve’s matchmaking is… not the best.

That applies to all games that try to use this system because it does not and can not work. Sever browsers are old work because they admit the very idea of a matchmaker for a game that isn’t 1v1 is impossible and if you find yourself in a server where you’re the neck in the boot/neck relationship, you can easily disconnect and find a new one.

Custom games are mostly workshop or scrims, but I just want to play casually, thus Quickplay.
I live in Asia region and Scrim servers I’ve found are Korean, I don’t want to join because of language barrier problem.
I haven’t touched TF2 for sometime. I probably ceased playing it when Overwatch came. Before there’s competitive mode in TF2, we all just selected servers on the browser. Attack/Defend maps are likely to be played seriously, but CTF with instant spawns… players mostly don’t care about capturing intelligence but play casually: Go out of the base hunting or stay in base chilling.

I prefer not to disconnect as I may get exp penalty/losing endorsements. It’s very embarrassing when you queue back into the same game.
Due to Role Queue, leaving a game may backfire your team severely like if there’s no one backfills as Tank or Support.

QP matchmaking works of your accounts hidden MMR that is based on all your play history. But with that said it’s a very ‘loose’ matchmaking. It will prioritize fast games over balanced MMR if it has to. And people queuing in stacks just breaks the entire system since GM’s can queue with their bronze friends and wreck the system.

My guess is that there aren’t nearly as many masters and grandmasters players in the QP queue, so it has to be very lenient about what games it’ll put them in, otherwise the queues would be way too long. I’ve noticed it tends to try and balance things out with matching the high end of the ladder wit the low end too. Like if your team is 6 platinums, the enemy team could be 4 platinums, 1 master, 1 gold. It’s harder to tell now that people have private profiles on, but it’s a trend I picked up on before they introduced them.

What you play in comp is not necessarily what you play in Quickplay.

You can be a good Diamond rank Genji because he’s the best hero you have that you can play seriously with, but then want to just unwind and play for fun, so you go to quickplay with Widowmaker whom you are bad at but is more fun for you. Since you’re not really good at Widow, you’ll keep losing games and you QP MMR goes down. But then still keep the Diamond SR because you play a different hero in ranked.

Combine that with how loose matchmaking is in QP and you’ll end up with varying ranks in the same game.

You’ll only be in trouble if that Genji main on Widowmaker gets ticked off enough to switch to Genji.

Technically you can still select that, main difference is, now you can’t play on Valve servers except through matchmaker.
You can still select community servers through browser.

How does quickplay matchmaking work?

Simple, it doesn’t.

No amount of convincing can make me believe that a properly working matchmaking can put complete and utter newbies on my team versus enemy team smurfs and high ranked players, so we’re literally fighting a worse match than 5vs6. You don’t put a 1.0 K/D player at lv13 who’s starting the game against platinum portrait players who obviously know what they are doing.

And then on other match, have bunch of master and gm players against my team too. Then other match where we got a bronze or silver tank player with gold support.

Quickplay matchmaker makes me want to uninstall, it’s so bad it shouldn’t be called a matchmaker anymore, it’s more like randomizer at this point.

Read the whole post instead of pulling half a sentence out.

Good luck… this game’s matchmaking will pair you with the most toxic people in the world… if you off-meta you are screwed and be prepared for hate, false reports, and UN-enjoyable games in which you have teammates actively jumping off the map, afking in spawn and hard scape goat blaming the bad plays on you until you quit. QP or comp.

I am pretty sure the hidden MMR bracket is almost non-existant right now. I get guys that headshot you even when being barely visible to the guys in my team of level 2-50 who don’t even know they can heal as a bastion.

Prove me wrong but I believe that Blizzard more or less removed the MMR thing altogether to have less long queues for DPS.

" QUICK PLAY - Square off against other players at your skill level." (from Overwatch 2 )

That’s just not true. At all.

I mean it seems to be true for me…I play in mid plat…I know private profiles are a thing but whenever I can check it’s usually gold plat or diamond…on extremely rare occasions I get masters and gm/500 I’ve counted a grand total of 3 times…over 3 years and I play a lot (2000+ hours)

All three times they were grouped with lowbies (which like someone else said above completely screws everything up)…not to mention smurfs

Like it’s far from perfect… Because it has to… I don’t think people realize how hard matchmaking actually is…Especially in this type of game with so many freaking variables

On a related note don’t forget that people exaggerate everything on here… it’s kind of like the five DPS thing… You can have 15 normal games in a row but as soon as you get that one 5dps game “I get five dps in all my games!“

If it happens once…it happens ALL the time

Yeah maybe a high and a low tier, but that about it. It surely is not a matchmaking as in competitive.

I can almost guarantee you that it’s the same exact matchmaker…the only difference is that in comp it factors in SR

I’m T500 and more than half of all my QP games are filled with Plat and below players.
Even with this being the case, as a Support only player, I can get up to 10+ min ques for QP
Recently theyve also increased the gap in SR for QP in an effort to shorten que times. So this is becoming even more common to have games with gigantic stretches in SR

:frowning: oh noes. too many game modes i guess.

It doesnt. Im low diamond and every single day I play against Gms sometimes top500.

Theres not enough people playing this game.

It really doesn’t work, always fun to join a game and get completely stomped, than look at the other teams profiles and notice a serious gap in rankings from yours and theirs. At least occasionally you’ll get them on your team sometimes
