How does one "get good?"

So every time I play comp with friends we win around 60-70% of the games. When I solo queue I lose 70% of the games. Nothing changes about my skill which makes me feel like I’m boosted (which also makes me feel like I’m dragging them down).

I honestly don’t get it. I get really good gravs as Zarya, I reliably take out tracer as McCree. Pretty sure I do well as Zen and Ana, and yet I lose all the time.

Is there something I’m missing?

I give the same advice to everyone trying to become a better player:

If these are happening rarely - it is more luck then skill.
If you can consistently shutdown tracer as McCree at the people of your own skill level ( 90% of the time ) it means you are doing something right.

For example, you practice very specific skills such as
Try landing only headshots as McCree.

I will give you a basic story of me playing TF2
When I started playing I was a horrible Sniper. I mean I used to body shot all the time.

So I decided to get better by only getting headshot kills. I would even apologize if my kill was not a headshot. Even if I missed every shot I made sure a 100% sure that I only landed that headshot.

After about 200 hours I became so good people thought I use an Aimbot. I could headshot a scout mid air as he is flying to me.

I could headshot a spy based on a glimmer of him bumping into an enemy. You practice one skill at a time with dedication and you will soon start seeing it pay off. Don’t be happy with being able to do it “once” or twice a game.

Be only happy when you are consistent.

I think you need to stick with just 1 or 2 heroes and improve as much as possible on those, your problem isn’t rare and often times it’s people who think they can flex when playing flex well in itself is not an easy thing to do consistently.

So stick with maybe only Mccree or one other hero and get gud on those before you explore more options.

You’ve learned how to play around your friends or they are playing around you.

Winning with friends and winning solo DO require different skill sets. Solo queue you now have to learn how to establish trust with total strangers, you’ll have to deal with people that may be uncooperative or not communicate at all. You’ll deal with things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a team.

Zarya requires intense coordination to get ult and bubble value. If your team is trickling and solo flanking all the time, those are team meets you can’t get bubble charge from.

Practice.

I know that’s pretty vague, but pick a specific skillset you wish to get better at and practice. Aim isn’t the end-all-be all skill either. You can only get so far with good aim.

I personally value the skill of staying alive more than aim. I practiced not dying while also fulfilling my role. I climbed rather high once I got good at not dying needlessly.

Trolls…people who are not even trying…who refuse to play the objective… who will do everything possible to lose the game, because you asked them to switch…trolls…
