In first person he holds it sideways but in third person he holds it the right way???
The way Hanzo draws his bow and the fact that it hasn’t any scope it means that he either uses it as in 3rd person or with a near 45 degrees tilt (the bow’s position in first person is just a way to make it easer for the players to see around).
What the players sees in first person isn’t always the animation the character has in third player.
A good example of this are Zarya and McCree.
- Zarya punches with her fist in first person but use her weapon in third person.
- McCree rolls in third person but in first person is he sliding.
He holds it horizontally. But for some stupid reason when you’re facing it he holds it vertically so he can protect himself from headshots. Pretty stupid.
In would love for his bow to not block his face anymore, as well.
Hanzo holds his bow horizontally in first person as a gameplay mechanic to improve player visibility. Otherwise he is holding the bow in a more proper position. Even if it is still not the full proper traditional stance and angle. (though he is using a short bow and not a long bow)
Why dosen’t the man use a crossbow?
Because Crossbows are not a traditional weapon of Japan.
Crossbows were invented for similar reasons as guns, to provide an easily trainable mid-long range weapon that you can throw in the hands of peasants and serfs to make into a militia to support your Knights, and were primarily utilized in Europe and not Japan. Crossbows fell out of use once guns got invented.
In Japan they used primarily Long Bows and was a traditional weapon of the Samurai, who also trained in the way of the Sword. With Women learning to use the Naginata for home defense. Peasants that served their lord in militias were trained in the use of the Spear unless they had aptitude for using bows (such as already existing hunters), then they are trained in the use of the Long Bow.
Which the interesting thing is that when Muskets came from the West into Japan the Long Bow was able to compete with the Muskets. The Long Bow’s Indirect Fire capabilities allowed for more arrows to be fired into a given zone and allowed for hills to shield the bowmen from any attempt at return fire from the Muskets, as they were shorter range direct fire weapons.
Ultimately Bows could not keep up with the technological advancements that guns got and so Bows fell out of military use but remained as a traditional sport that is highly respected. It may not be used for war or hunting as much, but it is treated as a way of strengthening not only your body, but also your mind as it improves your focus.
Which is why it is still taught in Japan as a traditional art. Makes sense why Hanzo would use a bow though, especially since the technological advancements applied to arrows gives him a repertoire of abilities and flexibility that normal guns wont be able to match.
My favorite example is moiras running animation.
First person? Both hands forward at the ready to give or take life.
Third person? Anime naruto run.

Mainly because it’s less obtrusive to the player’s view.
Probably also because it’s a smoother animation for if the player spams left click, the sideways stance allows for much quicker shots and is often used by trick shooters.
But in third person he uses the more traditional stance as is befitting his character.
You do realize that has been fixed for a long time now, right?
As someone who used to be into archery, his first person stance annoys me quite a bit. XP
I understand why it’s like that (for player viability). And OW isn’t even the first game to treat first person bows this way. Skyrim did it as well, IIRC.
But it’s like … gah. Reminds me of those stupid gangsters who shoot pistols sideways. It’s so cringe. XD
Drive-by Hanzo.
This, Genji is doing backflips and stuff when double jumping for 3rd person but for first person it’s just a double jump.
Who cares how he holds it, he’s a stupid hero that shouldn’t exist.
I just realized the Casual skin has some kind of crossbow.
Another example is Moira.
We see her hands in first person while she is running but the enemy sees her having her hands on her sides.
When? Proof is on your shoulders amigo.
Read about the battle of Agincourt to see why peasants with crossbows is inferior to trained Longbowmen.
