How does competitive rank work

So my gf and I just started competitive together but have completely different ranks now, i initially placed into Bronze 2 and she placed into Silver 3 after our second rank up and I was placed into silver 4 and she was placed in gold 4 but we both preform just as well, this is for open queue, is there some other factors that contribute to her climbing much faster? I don’t really play comp so idk what goes into it or what I need to personally improve on

I’m hearing that there’s more that goes into and also that’s it’s broken so far lol

In short, it’s complicated and kinda broken right now.

Keep going and see if you continue to rank up

Real answer: Your rank is heavily determined by your own performance at lower ranks. Win/loss still matters, but everything you do in-match matters.

Was her account initially ranked higher or are they brand new accounts? If it was initially ranked higher, that could be why. She could also be simply playing better than you. I know you say you are performing “just as well,” but, uh, that’s like, impossible.

She’s a brand new acct compared to mine, she plays dva and I play Ram, but what is performing well tho? I don’t really die a lot and contribute a bit

The game pulls more than just your wins vs losses. It will look at your stats in a game also. (SR / MMR) someone who has 7 wins in a row that is 40 and 0 vs someone who has 7 wins in a row that is 10 and 10 will climb at different rates. Also, if you get matched with higher ranking players on the other team and win. that would be a bigger gain than if you beat a team that is overall ranked lower than you. Ranked is a mess right now but keep your eyes open devs have updates for ranked next season.

I believe it looks at your stats and compares them to players in your rank. If it thinks you’re overperforming, you’re likely to rank up

Well its just guess from my sight ranking:

How well did u perform in the match
how dmg/heal/mit.
Kill/death. Less death more kills.
If you win 7 but have lost around 5 then either derank or stay so must likely stay below 4 to get rank up.

Amount of dmg/heal/mit idk if that also are a part but we can take that aswell tho find it kinda useless since you can have a total of 31 kills but do like 3k and another has also 31 but does 7k

I wish it collected that info, dva has a lot my survivability and some more tools to increase those stats compared to rammatra I feel like so that may explain, cause so far I’m not being de ranked, just climbing slower

The game will collect a lot of that info you can go into your career profile and see states for individual hero’s so you can always compare your stats on Ram vs hers on D.Va. if your profiles are not set to privet, you could look at anyone’s individual stats.

it doesnt work thats the problem

This is all supposition, nobody knows what determines your MMR, as blizzard has purposefully hidden it from us as much as they possibly can. OW1 had a more comprehensive SR system where the unknows were just what effected the numbers you were getting for a win or loss.

Going from OW1 to OW2, I saw a 1 skill tier division (100 SR) drop for every loss in my initial 7-wins placement. From there, I’ve seen climbs of an average of 2 skill tier divisions per 7 wins until you hit the SR/STD you were at in the previous season.

In other words, if you were to ignore your rank for the first 50 or so matches (25 wins, 25 losses), you hit roughly where you were and can now finally start working to climb past your expected rank. Meanwhile, all of your matches, regardless of what rank you see, are supposedly matchmade more or less the same from before. Your rank is just artificially lowered to incentivize playing 50 matches instead of 5.

Just asking but have you two always played together from start of ow2 like from when it released to now?

Pretty much, any competitive matches we’ve played have only been together

Then ig its ur performance is the problem
Try get less death and try kill as many u can it should work and if ur support save more ppl

Bronze 2 to Silver 4 is a climb of 3 skill tier divisions.
Silver 3 to Gold 4 is a climb of 4 skill tier divisions.

It sounds more like a rounding issue when awarding 3 or 4 STDs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next climb was you from Silver 4 to Silver 1 and her from Gold 4 to Gold 2, where the climbs are 3 STDs and 2 STDs, respectively.

The only other factors have been mentioned elsewhere, where some statistics like your EAD for the hero you played are compared to other players who pick that hero at that rank. Those, I think impact your rank less than wins/losses, but could be the difference between gaining 2 and 3 STDs; or it couldn’t, Blizzard hasn’t really specified.

I really wouldn’t worry about it yet. You’re both still climbing. You’re able to stay grouped. Keep going.

Im bit new to the comp but where does the group line stop if ur silver 1?
