I’m horrible at seeing the kill feed. I pretty much only notice it when I’m walking back from spawn. I have TAB bound to middle mouse button, so I do check that regularly, but mid-fight that’s not going to happen. So my questions are:
-
Can your monitor be too big/close to easily see the kill feed with peripheral vision? I moved to a 27" and I feel like my eyes have to move a ton to see it, to the point where I’m missing what’s in my FOV every time I check it.

How do you get in the habit of checking it? More interested in hearing from people who had to train themselves to use it, since I’m so used to using TAB instead.
And somewhat unrelated, but I wish you could change the transparency on the TAB screen. I’d just have that up most of the time, even during fights.

Is there a way to increase the sound or make a more distinct sound for an elimination happening? I know it does one if you kill someone but not sure if there’s a way to make it ping if someone on your team dies like in the elimination arcade playlist. That would certainly make it more obvious.
Sorry but even I have trouble keeping track of it, there is tabbing but it only shows so much and once the spawn timer is out it will show them as alive.
However, whenever I have an ana on my team I sometimes hear dying noises but it was just the enemy ana.

I think there’s a difference between seeing the kill feed and keeping track actively of who’s in the fight or not. The kill feed doesn’t display every elim that happened during the fight and even hitting tab may not tell you if someone was killed because they already respawned, but they wouldn’t be back from spawn yet.

Exactly so it’s not a perfect solution. I have no idea how some people are able to track if we are “up 1” or something along those lines.

It’s pretty easy in quick fights. Just noticing if there were two picks for your team but only one for theirs is enough to know.

Maybe you can set up an alarm that beeps every 20 sec or so, and force yourself to look in the top-right corner every time it does? Idk if that’d help forming that habit, or if you’ll just end up zoning out the beep

Not that I know of. When someone who screams dies on either team within earshot, I know to check the kill feed or press tab. You would lose the perception of distance if you could raise the volume to be audible from all distances.

there is no secret mechanic, a fight strats and youre most likely gonna be focusing on hitting shots/avoiding what the enemy is trying to throw your way. This will take a lot of your concentration, so you most likely arn’t looking at the top right b/c youre too busy min/maxing your shots. Once a fight starts, and especially so when your ready to use your ult you should be checking the kill feed.
If it feels hard for you, go to quickplay and keep attempting to look at killfeed every fight. Worry less about performing your best and worry more about ingraining this habbit into you.
Tracking if “were up 1” is in fact very easy. Teamfights happen 6v6 (ideally) so if one or 2 people die… simple math, no?

Good way that I learned from an ml7 video (just to give credit where it’s due) is to watch replays and switch between watching gameplay and killfeed, keeping track at all times. This means you can also slow gameplay down while you’re getting used to it. And then from there just actively focusing it during games until it’s habit.

The checking before ult is something I try to do and even preach to my team: “Always press TAB before grav™” (or any ult). I have started working in arcade on checking the feed more often, but I play Mystery Heroes a lot which makes me want to press TAB instead to see the ever-changing composition of the other team.
I feel like I spend more time in tab than in game when I play MH lol
It would be kinda cool if they added an option to reposition the killfeed to where ever you want it on the screen, and also change the opacity. I’d probably try putting it on the right side of the ult-charge meter, even if it might cover part of my gun. lol.
This reminds me of not realizing your health is low in World of Warcraft, and having to get an addon that shows your health bar near your character, rather than in the top left, back in the day.

I think it’s just something that gets a lot easier with time. A few seasons ago I started giving myself goals in comp games to practice that. I couldn’t remember to tab consistently, so my goal was to tab at least twice every game. I was having a hard time keeping track of the kill feed, so my first goal was to say how many people were respawning when I died. It gets a lot easier over time.

there are youtube videos that do this for various intervals - i trained myself to periodically check the kill feed and (at a different time) to hit tab to check my team’s ultimate status by starting one of the videos before matches.

You could also try looking at ultimates after every team fight. What I did to learn this was tab after fights and call out each enemy ult I had seen recently (“They used shatter and beat. Did anyone see if they used nano?”). Then I would try to guess was was coming (“I think they have to have valk now”). I feel like this is a fairly simple habit to start and it reinforces a lot of good habits. It makes you tab more often, it gets you thinking about the enemy’s win condition and it helps you start to think of time in a match as “in a team fight” or “poke between fights”. Looking for ult charge will also make you more likely to pay attention to kill feed because that’s the best way to estimate who has ults.

Oh, I didn’t even think of including tab checking in that. I should give that a shot, cuz I’m really inconsistent with that. Gonna download a HIIT Interval app pronto!

Ever since I switched to 27’ (monitor in my face) I gave up on killfeed. I wish it could be adjustable, that would be a huge QoL.
Another great idea is that they implement the team status from replay. It’s already in the game so apparently for some reason they don’t think it’s a good idea to put it in comp…
