How do you carry as support?

I am bronze 1 currently. Duoing with a friend, who is bronze 2(they just started playing basically, not even over 100 hrs yet). It feels like we always get the low sr players while their team has twice the elims as ours(no exaggeration, basically every single game). It rarely ever feels like they aren’t higher ranked than our team(or just better). What do I do to carry as support? If I was playing dps it would be easier, but I am focusing on support since its my only role not in at least silver atm. Half my games I’m almost tempted to just play dps moira/brig to at least cushion the low amount of elims we have compared to them…it really is just a respawn simulator at this point. I keep them up as much as I can. The vast majority of the time, the dps don’t play cover, or high ground, and just expect the supports to keep them alive, through multiple people focusing them. I really don’t know how to carry these games. It probably doesn’t help that I want to play mercy and get better at her either, since, the dps on our team are usually worse than theirs so dmg boosting them does very little…

There only so much you can do as a Moira alone. You can turn the tide of some game but you still need your team.

I learned Moira and Mercy as main. I only play support.

Silver 3 atm

By shooting things and only heal when it is actually needed. By shooting things you will practice your aim. Supports kit are overpowered, but most of the support role players use these heroes just on 15-30% of their actual potential.
As for me, it is much easier to cary a game with Bap, than with any dps for instance.
Just imagine, you can only do damge compared to doing the same and even more damage + being able to heal + having overpowered utility. How do ppl even have such questions for support, I don’t get it. Play dps role and you will see how much easier it is to play support in comparison (at the same rank).
Somebody catches you off guard, boom, press shift and return half of your hp instantly, while it is still healing you over the time after. Still unable to kill that gengu? Immortality, boom, and you have extended your effective hp to 500, and the guy just has 200, ez 1v1 and even 1v2 is possible here with good aim.
Playing ana, someone attacks you, boom, +100 hp, you are harder to hit due to your player model hitbox is small as hell, and imagine now you are having 300 hp instead of 200 just by throwing a nade that also hits the guy. And you still have your sleep in a pocket. On top of that, she has no falloff, sniper rifle that does 70 damage. Is that even a support? That’s a killer. Same for Bap, 25 damage per bullet, 75 bursts with 150 hs potential. Poor s76 nervously smoking away.

Climbed outta Bronze just doing my best, but choosing heroes for the map. Which is probably dumb, you should choose for the composition. Or, I hear, whoever makes it easiest. At the same time, I climbed outta Bronze.
Basically, I don’t one-trick, certain maps and my mood can be better for different heroes. Not that I don’t have a favorite hero, and she’s excellent at dumping heals.

Moira and Zen are probably your best friends to get out of bronze as you can be aggressive with them. Focus enemy supports, keep an eye on your mates to keep them alive.

Don’t follow the mindless divers. If you can carry, staying alive is your top 1 priority.

If you have good mates though, be sure to support them correctly. Even if its rare, its worth to help a good DPS, they still have better damage than you.

Moira is also insanely good at taking down Widows, Hanzos and Genjis and they’re plenty of them in bronze. Even Soldiers and Cassidy can be easy targets (keep your dash ready for Cassidy grenade though). Sometimes it takes just a purple orb thrown toward a widow to kill her…

also stop worrying about stats and actually do meanful impact

The game is designed to reward team play more than solo play.

In general, unless you’re ranked WAY lower than you should be, you shouldn’t be able to carry on your own. Regardless of what role you’re playing, I would say trying to carry is almost always a bad idea.

Before I get into it, let me just say that the post above is absolutely terrible advice in general. Especially in mid-to-low ranks, there is no such thing as “team play” except in those very rare games where everything just “clicks”. But those games don’t happen often enough to climb; you do NOT want to make your SR reliant on the RNG matchmaker blessing you with good teammates.

You want to always be trying to carry a game, which generally means trying to get meaningful picks on the other team while dying as little as you can. If you’re bad at it, you want to keep doing it until you get better at it.

If you’re Gold or below, the main secret is that Tanks and DPS are usually extremely bad at peeling for their teams. You know when that annoying Genji/Reaper/whatever flanks, and your teammates ignore you and leave you to fight alone? Yeah…both teams are like that. So do it to them first before they do it to you. If you’re playing Moira or Lucio or Kiriko, flank the enemy supports (or DPS that may be free kills) and kill them. If you’re playing Ana, Bap or Zen, go for off-angles (and especially high ground) and click heads. Keep your cooldowns handy in case you need to escape (biggest the mistake most DPS Moiras do is using BOTH cooldowns to engage, and then having nothing for escape or to peel for their team).

Brig and Mercy are a bit trickier, because Mercy is in this weird spot where her kit gets more value the more competent your teammates are, Brig is mostly a Repair Pack/Whip Shot bot. That’s why Mercy becomes a valid pick at about Plat and above, but below that, your teammates are going to be a lot less consistent. You’ll have to stop worrying about winning specific games and focus more on developing her movement tech and learning how to Rez safely. This won’t make your teammates any better, but it’ll make sure that you stay alive long enough to get more uptime on your beams. And of course, learning when and how to use her pistol to get picks yourself is the ultimate power move, but I wouldn’t recommend relying on that too much at first.

Likewise, what you want to learn how to do with Brig is land Whip Shots from high ground, you want to land those Whip Shots as often as you can to keep your Inspire uptime going. You can’t frontline with her, except on rare occasions where your tank is making ALL the space, and the enemy team isn’t shooting at you. You (usually) can’t go for solo duels anymore.

I went from Bronze 5 to Plat 4 so far as Support. What seems to do it is doing more DPS. Could be a coincidence but playing as Bap, Zen and Moira.

Also for god’s sake if you get a good team, click that Stay as a Team button in the bottom right corner ASAP.

Use voice comms or ping EVERYTHING if not. I’ve bound ping to one of my extra mouse buttons so I can easily ping without taking my hands off WASD.

Especially Zen, every time you discord ping and or/say “Discord on x” to your team so they can focus them, and pinging is great when an enemy goes out of your line of sight because it stays on for 2 seconds, so you can ping them behind walls and cover.

Learn more than one Support character so you can switch. I’ll play Zen but if I’m getting dumpstered by a Genji I’ll switch off to Moira. If my team is more spread out I’ll switch to Ana to heal them better at a distance. If someone else has picked an off healer such as Zen or Brig, pick a Support that has burst healing such as Bap and Ana.
Dont waste an ult to keep your team alive if you’re already down one player, in 5v5 especially chances are you’ll lose the fight anyway. Unless it’s OT/last push.

Don’t focus healing as much on self sustain characters such as Soldier and Hog unless they’re dangerously low and on cooldown.

One more tip which I didn’t consider until I watched some Bap tips videos, heal your Tank and prioritise your better DPS. If you’ve got a 14-2 Sojourn and a 5-5 Junkrat, always heal the Sojourn first.

Obviously heal the worse player if they’re the only one damaged and you’re not taking your eyes off your better team mates but otherwise focus your better team mates.

Dps Moira vs heal bot Moira. Dps Moira wins.

Tesla did 33k heals first bronze 5 game. He lost. He started winning more, and gaining more ranks, when he dpsed more.

Fwiw, I gained 800 sr (1700 to 2500) in 2 seasons on Lucio after playing a few hours ffa death match. Getting crushed by diamond dps made killing silver dps super easy.

Tldr, you win by fragging out.

Zenyatta is op give him a go

learn zenyatta and basically dps your way out of bronze.

bronze is a strange place where your lethality matters more than anything else. moira and brig seem tempting as they are durable and are decent in duels, but zen is much better. find good positioning and keep shooting

Yeah I always try and ping who I have discorded. Normally they don’t seem to focus the target down so I’m left to attempt to burst them down myself.(although I try to discord who’s already being attacked) If we’re losing I usually swap to moira and try and kill their back-line if possible/punish overextended enemies. I really wish I could play more mercy as I enjoy her gameplay above most other supports. I definitely feel like it’s not as viable if the team isn’t that great mechanically. I’ve been practicing her tech a lot, and for the most part I usually am the last one left, which is some improvement over when I just get dove and immediately die. I really am feeling like I am forced to play zen, brig, and moira to deal with the lack of elims our team has compared to them.

I can agree with this. The one warning I’d give is that Zen also has the uncontrollable effect of auto-triggering teammates who think he’s a “bad” support or believe that healing numbers are important. I’ve lost track of how many games I’ve been in where everybody started INTing simply because I picked Zen, no matter what else was going on in the game.

I don’t bring this up to dissuade anyone from picking him, but just adding to the fact that, in low ranked games, this will happen constantly.

On low level zenyatta isnt good option. Keeping on eye your allies in bronze is almost impossible or puts you in dangerous position. From low bronze to low gold baptiste is the best option in all comp all maps. Easy to keep your team alive, easy to take good highgroud and easy to kill low or out of position targets. Just keep the regeneration burst to yourself. It really dont do anything to your alliens but can keep you alive when you are focused by gengu. And always be on highground if possible. Bronzes don’t look up, especially if tank is on lowground.

Just go dps moira, any healing is basically irrelevant. Its just point who do more damage in shorter time.

Mobility is bad , otherwise is good support

if zen was a throw pick who would not be so papular in pro and high lvl play. how sad some people dont understand that. i dont like people picking lucio, because at my rank they dont use him for speed, so he is wasted.

Make a choice, stop flip flopping around. You have to make a decision and see it through for better or worse.

At your rank, falling to B5 means basically nothing, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

High rank players are always looking to make a play, from safe places, or building ult with poke. They can’t do this when anything can kill you instantly be not being sure. Without taking calculated risks.

But, they also do X, and die a lot, but each time they don’t think i won’t do that i died, they think, if i just did this 1 thing better i would have won, if i just had an escape planned, exc…

  • I take 99% of the reasonable chances as a support main. My rien doing something stupid and very obviously stupid? imma help that poor dumb oaf, period. From a safe angle (that is just where i can always see him and a enemy has to stand bad to get at me). Spam damage when possible, throw nade, suzu, anything i can do that isn’t total suicide i do for him.

Worst case we both die, i have some more ult, i am respawning in sync and he knows i am there with him. (sometimes i do this with dps or healer, it depends on who is boldest)

Best case, we both get a TON of ult, live, flip the situation and live like gods.

If i do nothing? none of this is possible, the enemy only gets ult charge, we still lose…

Just make sure you reflect at your actions when it goes bad AND smile when you do good.
