Hey, I recorded some Overwatch with a single Joy-Con on PC before the Switch version came out. I haven’t gotten the Switch version yet… I’m glad it has gyro controls, but I’m hearing they leave a fair bit to be desired, which is giving me some pause.
Does anyone else here play any games with gyro controls on PC (whether DualShock 4, Joy-Cons, Pro Controller, or Steam Controller)? Anyone able to shed some light on how they compare to what PC gamers are used to?
It looks to me like some research has gone into this. There’s good stuff like the option for the right stick to disable gyro, for example. But it lacks the option for a simple gyro off button (there’s a reset button option, which is a start, but isn’t much good for dealing with targets above or below, and most controller resetting is horizontal, not vertical). It doesn’t appear to have any configuration options for acceleration or smoothing.
I hear there’s a minimum threshold on turning speed before the game starts responding to input, which is a serious no-no. And I see that there’s the option for aim assist, which is really weird – you don’t have aim assist with mouse, do you? – but at least that’s optional.
What have people’s experiences been with the gyro aiming in Switch’s Overwatch? And while we’re at it, anyone wanna see this stuff on PS4?

I play a lot of FPS games on pc such as tf2,csgo and of course, overwatch. Imo if you have motion controls together with sticks, it is almost as if your aim has fine tuning, which is what the mouse can do and the stick doesn’t, this is the reason Splatoon players play with gyro(Able to adjust aim slightly or while you are doing an action where you can’t reach the sticks

and as for the aim assist, it’s there because people can’t fine tune their aim with sticks, that’s why I have AA off on my snipers on switch, which are characters that I basically can’t play without gyro.
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it makes sense that there’s aim assist for stick aiming, but it looks like Overwatch for Switch also has a “Gyro-Aiming Aim-Assist” option (from screenshots I’ve seen).
I don’t mind that it’s optional. It’s just a weird thing to be there in the first place
Yeah, it looks like snipers in particular benefit from gyro. Have you found it to be responsive/precise?
I was excited to play Winston on console so I could flick my controller up for jumps, but half of the time it goes up but not down and messes me up.
Tldr: fast movements are a no
It’s decent. Compared to games like Splatoon 2, it’s not very precise. It feels slightly weird, almost if there’s “mouse acceleration” but with gyro if you know what I mean, if you do most of your flick’s movement with the sticks then fine tune a bit with gyro, you should be fine.

Do you mean for the same movement it moves up further than down? This could be the “mouse acceleration” @TrickyHunter’s talking about. If you flick down as fast as you flick up they’ll hopefully balance out.
EDIT, since this forum won’t let me reply to both separately or both in one post

TrickyHunter:
Interesting. Acceleration is a good option, but it’s a little worrying that it doesn’t appear to be configurable/optional.
I like to rely on the stick very little and do most of my movement with the gyro. I think I’m gonna have to get my hands on the game and see what it’s like.
Thanks
This is a really well - made video!!
Keep up the good job
