I would really like to understand placements. Last time I did placements, I lost seven matches won three, and placed bronze one. Which was better than losing 9 and placing bronze 5. This time, though, I won seven matches and lost three to place… bronze 1. This feels like such a slap in the face, and I felt I improved so much between just to not even moving to silver 5. Since then, I have just been blessed with leavers and throwers because “It’s bronze, it doesn’t even matter.” This is really pushing me away from comp.
It’s the hero bans fault tbh
Start is based on your MMR from quick play.
Then you move up and down by smaller amounts each game and it matches according in placements.
The prediction is just a visual guide. Then when you place your MMR at that point is the rank you get.
So, you’ve gotten bronze 1 a couple of times now, so it would suggest it’s fairly accurate.
Your next 10 or so games, you’ll get the calibration modifier. So if you’re better than that and win a few you’ll quickly move up to silver 5. Maybe even 4 or 3.
My big tip for you. Focus on how you play, don’t look at the ranks. If you keep improving small things each time. You’ll find you’re just winning more than you lose and suddenly a high rank with out stressing over it.
They work by getting you to play More overwatch
??? People need to take the tin foil hats off and actually just help players with actual answers.
If you placed bronze many times, your basically stuck for your placements. You would have to create a new account to see if you can place higher. System remembers what you’ve placed each time even when your playing QP.
Behind the scenes a bunch of virtual coins get flipped and then one gets picked to decide your ranking. It’s all very scientific.
just get someone to boost you out of bronze. otherwise u will be stuck in bronze forever
People who do this are unironically so sad. It serves no purpose other than inflate your ego. They’re just going to drop down to where they were before and end up with the same issue. You need to actually get better at the game if you want to climb. I know people don’t want to put in the effort and think they are entitled to a higher rank, but that’s how it is.
How sure are you that this is going to happen then? Surely an accurate system wouldn’t place them higher on a new account?
Because if someone is hard stuck like silver or something it means they weren’t good enough to play in a much higher ranked lobby. So what happens when a silver player goes up against an entire team of what would essentially be smurfs for them on a normal day?
No one ever claimed the match maker was perfect or accurate. People get lucky with placements. It happens. So what? That’s 10 matches which is nothing. In order to actually get a good idea of a players skill rating you need a big sample size. 100 matches is usually a solid indicator and the more you play the more accurate it is.
Placements mean nothing. I’ve seen pro players place gold and plat on their alts and easily climb up back to GM/Champ because that’s how it works. If you are good you will climb.
So basically it’s boosting people, because it doesn’t have enough data to go off on. Which is another seperate issue, because while they will drop down in time in some cases, they shouldn’t be placed that high up to begin with ideally. Glad we agree then in some ways. Just wish some people weren’t so adamant about newbies getting into plat because “they’re just as good as you are”.
Somewhat, there’s really not much they can do cuz, “you don’t know what you don’t know”. So unless you want blizzard to have insane access to your personal info or something to gauge where you should place in a video game, then this is probably the best they can do. That’s also why you have calibration matches to turbo charge you up or down to the rating you belong in faster.
As far as new players in plat, idk about that, i think its just people who see new accounts playing badly and assume its a new player when they could be someone on an alt practicing a hero they are really bad at. Happened to me when I played freja, couldn’t win a game so save my life lmao.
I’d settle for upping the comp requirements to 75 won QP games, if not 100 outright. No idfea what they were smoking when they reduced it to 20 a few months back
lowkey agree

Yea I love the hypocrisy of the matchmaker defenders here.
If a new player wants to make an alt account to get out of bronze, “no that’s scummy, don’t do that it’s abusing the system!”
But when plat and diamond players complain about these same type of accounts in their games, “they are the same rank as you, crack on!” lmao
I regularly get placed in QP matches with masters and occassionally T500 players as a solo player which I always found odd because i’m metals rank. It’s not a big deal because the matchmaker usually gives me some on my team as well and other than adjusting to the incredible rate at which everything explodes and movement being superior, the games feel fine. I’m guessing i’m paired up in these matches because of my MMR.
Pivot to placement matches, it doesn’t matter whether I have unfortunate games and only win a few of my placement matches or if things go great and I win all but one, it still dumps me in the same spot.
I have no idea how the formula works.
I think the placement is influenced some by your MMR but more heavily by where you placed the previous season no matter how well you play. I also think it’s a numbers game (yeah I know, obvious) to where certain roles have data points that count more than others. For example, big healing numbers on support don’t seem to do much. Full elims, low deaths, and damage seem to help. If it does work that way then I should probably not play LW during placements and just go Moira or Zen because they’re easier to farm the stats that placements are potentially tuned to look for. LW can dive and elim squishy targets pretty easily and can have a low death count, but damage numbers are typically lower.
Stats don’t matter, you just gotta win the games for the MMR to go up.
If a new player comes into the game and places plat or something then whatever. They’ll lose and eventually reach a rank where they even out. Not their fault, they’ve never played the game before so what choice do they have?
On the other hand you have a bronze player who has played the game for a while make an alt account thinking its some shortcut to a higher rank they think they deserve, but don’t want to put in the effort to improve.
One has no choice while the other does.
You win 5
You lost 5
You win 3
You lost 3
You win 4
You lost 4.
The game forces you to queue up with banned accounts, or level 1 endorsements if you win too much. Only players who can duo or can go 30-0 every match can rank up.
