How do lootboxes work?

I want to know if the following thing works:

  1. I get a lootbox
  2. I don’t open it until next season
  3. I open it after the season I got the lootbox in is over
  4. I get an Item from the new season
    Does this work?

This isn’t possible anymore.
Boxes get opened at the end of the season.

So if you want to make it a “big thing” don’t open a box until the final day you plan on playing for the season.
I open them as I get them, personally.

at least in ow1 the lootbox contents were determined before you opened them, so holding on to them wouldnt “help” you in getting some cosmetics later on.
