For context, I am a Diamond DPS and support player.
I’m at a loss. I’ve lost 400 SR in two days because every single game has a DPS Roadhog and I just have no idea how to play around him. If my Rein puts a shield down for a quarter of a second, I get hooked. If I take high ground, I get hooked. If I flank, I get hooked. If I’m around a corner, the hook freaking bends around the corner and gets me. I’m so lost. If there’s a Roadhog on the other team, I just lose by default because I (and many others) just can’t stop getting hooked out of positions that should be safe.
People say he punishes people for bad positioning, but that’s not what he does at all. He goes out of position to punish people who are in good positions. How are you supposed to play around this? Someone teach me.

Just never be within 20 meters even if it means giving up a good position for a bad one.

You might need to see a counselor about that. Yeah, both things.
Track it, stay out of range or dodge and use cover. You have to be aware.

Stay around 20 meters away from him. If you see the animation, backpedal. That is more or less the only true counterplay you as an individual have to protect yourself if you do not have a stun to trade.
You can also try baiting it and using invulnerability if your hero has it.
The further you are, even if you are in range, the more time you have to react. What I do, and this often works at mid range as Hog yourself (who I believe has the biggest hitbox) is that I hard fake a direction and stop moving shortly thereafter, ideally you fake toward your team because they assume you are peeling back.
If you get crazy with the adad they are going to be more precise. But if you make them think they have a free hook, they will often just whiff it.

yeah, unfortunately being in a “good position” is sometimes what gets you hooked. give him a wide berth, and keep repositioning to STAY out of hook line of sight and range. sorry i can’t give you more than that.
You have to bait out hook.
Additionally, save your high damage cooldowns until after he uses take a breather.
Keep an eye on the Roadhog at all times and make sure you know when he’s flanking
Then if he goes for a hook you have a much higher chance of reacting to it
You can do your best to not be in 20m of him at all times but obviously the game doesn’t always work out like that. I always try to bait out the hook when I’m in range and when I can’t see him I actively check flanking routes for his approach. The footsteps are your best clue.
Honestly just play Roadhog in quick play, you will see how people play mind games to dodge your hooks and what’s wrong with your movement and positioning.
I can’t tell you anything more unless you provide a replay to analyze.

It’s not good positioning if you get hooked. Good positioning is fluid and depends on the abilities (and cooldowns) of the enemy heroes.

i’m saying, i agree with them that hog does not punish bad positioning, he rewards it. hogs can go into a bad position and hook you out of a good position. if you don’t notice his sneaky flank (which should be impossible for him to pull off but isn’t, and will be impossible in OW2), then you will die before you have time to adjust to the fact that your previously good position is now bad because the hog put himself in a bad position to get to you. and of course hog gets away for free after you die, with zero punishment for his bad positioning to get that hook.
Just wait a few days until ow2 comes out, then you won’t have to see hog in 90% of games lol.

I would NOT play comp this last week. It just ruins your SR for OW2.

If he’s allowed to walk into a bad position (take space) and punish someone in a good position (vulnerable position), then he’s playing correct.
Situational. If it’s just you having problems, then you can watch your own vods back to pick up on cues you missed. His footsteps, whether or not you were aware of his hook cd status before peeking, whether or not you were in a greedy position and failed to respond to him challenging that position
If it’s your team having problems, you can look to pick characters that outright deny him and guarentee kills on him (counterhooks, stuns, wall, anti/sleep, discord, etc) or completely shut down his hooks (bubbles, matrix, stuns, sleep, lamp, etc). It’s not necessarily a team effort - if you’re similarly aware or more aware than the enemy roadhog, the counterhook should win pretty much every time. Same deal with stuff like sleep dart or flashbang etc.
Obviously stuns on dps won’t really be an option going forward into ow2, but on the bright side, since ow2 only has one tank, roadhog flanking your team means there’s no tank to stop you from flanking their team.
You close grindr and tinder
Mei, Meeeeiiiiii!
Seriously though you get 2 abilities to block hook (one saves your teammate). Also if you are hooked at full HP it’s impossible for hog to 1 shot you due to Mei’s smaller hitbox and 250hp.
Hard but not impossible. You can practice and get good at ending Mei and Reaper before they can fade / iceblock.
Tracking the cooldown when he used a hook is important. If he just used it, you can be aggressive. Otherwise wait for OW2 and hope he is so bad compared to other tanks that nobody plays him ever again.
Yea this is done by shooting them first for any amount of damage then hooking them giving you a super consistent 1 shot. However, if this player is really struggling odds are they may be in the lower ranks where hogs aren’t doing this type of thing.
