How do I get an original name?

Finally
After weeks of thinking of a cool, original, suiting name for myself - Nebula.
I am so happy, so excited to take 10£ out of my pocket to change my BattleTag.
I open up the forums, what’s the first thing I see?
A well known, frequent poster on the OW forums - Nebula.

Be creative. Struggle more to find some inspiration.

Go ahead and name yourself Nebula. You’ll have several players named Nebula, but we probably won’t meet all of them. If you want to be the most famous Nebula though, then push yourself to climb.

Alternatively, you can keep looking for a “cool” name. You have a billion people and a thousand years to compete against and find something truly new. You have to study and devote yourself to overcoming that hurdle to find a truly original name before someone takes it.

Most generally find it easier to take an existing name and make it so uniquely famous (or infamous) that everybody recognizes it (e.g. Elizabeth II, Trump, Hitler, etc).

It’s the internet. I’m afraid I can guarantee you no single dictionary word can be counted as ‘original’, and many of them so common you get duplicates even when used in conjunction (eg ghost, shadow, cat, dragon…)

My username is made of two words that have nothing to do with each other, chosen entirely because they’re easy to remember (assonant rhyme) and easy to spell. And yet, still already taken on a range of sites.

If anything, your current name ‘Yes’ is original. I’ve never seen a username like it.

Through my 16 years since I started gaming, I have never seen a gamer tag/famous character/ professional player use it.
What made it funny that the day I thought of the name out of nowhere a nebula crawls from the ground to create hundreds of threads in a week, quite funny… While kinda sad

I know a lot of people who like space-ish names for their usernames (recalling a friend who only used celestial body-themed names for their AIM usernames) and one of the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy is named Nebula.

But yeah, I feel ya. It is kinda sad. Like when you think you come up with a good name for your e-mail but type it in and it’s taken and now you don’t even WANT an e-mail address.

While it may be difficult.
I can try to become the best “Yes” possible
At first my journey will be confusing… aand probably taken by sites that have a 1 name policy.
These days the internet is so popular smashing your keyboard has a chance of the username being taken

You can’t expect that names from famous movies would be unique… There are thousands of people using name like that …
I’d suggest “whipMeGrandma”, it’s a nice southerner name that’s not used that much :smiley:
That, or while we’re still discussing south … “alphaKKONAElite” :smiley:

to be honest, I’m pleasantly surprised with pisces. Not a lot of pisces in these parts.

But as others have said, if you’re putting that much stock in it, find somewhere to settle.

I wasn’t that interested in it either because I hadn’t heard of it before the movies, but I was pleasantly surprised. She is an interesting and weird character.

My name was made from my brother’s childhood online name “Kidgloom” and My desire to be a doctor when i was a kid. Theyre by DoctorKid. I have never met a single person with the name and it surprisingly not too awkward to say and i usually get Doc. Try using two words that dont fit. maybe even mash them together.

I took two gods from mythology I liked the name of and fused them. While there are other Astrions in the world, I think I’m the only one that uses that name to play Overwatch.
