So i’m fairly new to overwatch and i play healer 99% of the time. I tend to play Brigitte and lucio but every time i play lucio or mercy i can never keep the winston at bay, mercy’s Lshift never saves me from him and no matter how many times i use my right click as lucio he always comes right back and kills me. I’ve been looking online and everybody just says to let your team deal with him but that isn’t always the case. If anybody could give me some good pointers on how to counter him i’d really appreciate it!
Brig = Shield bash and swing at him and hope for the best.
Lucio = Boop him away and if he still comes after you, speed boost away to the rest of your team.
Ana = Sleep him and run away, then anti-nade him as he wakes up to make him run away.
Does mercy have any real way of countering him?
The number one tool is to use a microphone and let the team know you need help.
lol ok thanks, i guess i’ll just have to try harder lol
Wait until he uses his jump and then Guardian Angel away. GA cooldown is a lot shorter than his jump cooldown.
This is similar to how a Widow will drop to low ground after getting jumped on, WInston falls down to chase, then she just grapples back up high and shoots him.
Lucio: Save boop and amp it up for him. Try and boop him away before he hits the ground. Try and position yourself near your team so they see him and attack him
Mercy: Use your Guardian Angel after he jumps on you to the farthest teammate you can find while also calling him out. Use the spacebar towards the end of Guardian Angel to get some extra length out of it. Try super jumping if you are good with it
Zenyatta: Discord, call him out, aim, and hope for the best
Ana: Sleep/nade him or die (call him out of course)
Brigitte: Call him out and bash him so your teammates can converge on him.
Moira: Fade away and call him out
You’re going to have to accept that Winston will sometimes just kill you.
the only healer that struggles againts winston is probably zenyatta but thats only if he has bubble
every other hero has tools to escape him, mercy depends on your teammates, lucio is lucio, brig counters him, moira can literally fight him, ana can either sleep or nade to keep herself alive
Winston is good against people who are in there own. So try and stay with your team as much as possible.
Oh yeah, this reminds me that learning how to Super Jump with Mercy is a good way to avoid him without needing allies on high ground.
Just make sure they don’t have a Widow, Honzo, Ashe, McCree, etc, waiting for you
I super jumped into a Widow on lijang the other day and I felt so dumb T.T
You are not supposed to “deal with him”
Your team is, his bubble makes it difficult.
Baguette can bash and swing away
Lucioooooooooooooo boop and speed boost away you can’t fight him
Ana - sleep him and again, run away.
Zen - yeah your dead.
Mercy - GA away
Thanks for the help guys! I’ll try your tips out soon!
as lucio, bait out winston jump without using abilities and stayin on heal to mititage his dmg, (take high ground or something so he has to use it to catch you) then speed boost away. Mercy, go back to spawn, and pick lucio, then use the lucio tactic.
Winston’s jump pack has a 6 second cooldown, and bubble is 13. A perfect animation canceled melee jump with pinpoint landing accuracy(i.e. not most tiers) does up to 80 burst, and tesla is 60/s. You should be able to guesstimate how long you have left to live and act accordingly.
Bubble usage determines what you should do. Sometimes it gets dropped early to block CC, other times it’s deployed late. Depending on either you may want to ride the knockback to get out of range and force them to leave the bubble, or charge into the bubble to pop an ability.
Your teammates will defend themselves. It’s less than ideal to be standing close enough for both of you to get hit, but they will actually do something.
Dying is normal. Getting swatted around the map is also normal.
If you play a hero that requires LoS for some abilities, they will be blocked by bubble, which means you have to predict where it will be and adjust preemptively.
You should know where the nearest health pack is, and have some sense of if the enemy Winston knows where you are.
For Mercy specifically, you should have escape options, multiple if possible. Your teammates may not cooperate when you tell them where to stand, but in the pro scene the best Mercies won’t stop talking about how important this is.
If you hit all of your shots with your pistol on his head than yes.
