How are Mei players suppose to play in current meta?

I started playing lately after a long hiatus and I started my placements in open role queue and I’ve been failing games left and right when trying to use Mei.

Several things I noticed that makes things difficult for me as a Mei player include the extreme prevalence of barriers, and it feels like it makes a Mei’s damage output irrelevant, probably because Sigma’s barrier up time combined with others such as Reinhardt or Orisa just makes it impossible to deal any sort of reliable and consistent damage. Most if not all the time, you’re hitting barriers rather than enemy players. Also I find myself running out of ammo very often and I developed ammo anxiety for the first time playing Mei after several hundred hours, and it’s extremely frustrating when I run out of ammo during a team fight because freezing someone takes a huge chunk of ammo away, then entering cryo freeze with 0 ammo and knowing that I’m just delaying my inevitable death. Another thing I noticed is that ice wall is kind of useless now? They’re 400 HP now and I find myself unable to reliably cut a team fight in half because it’s broken earlier than I expect.

So how are Mei players suppose to play in current meta? If you’re a high tier Mei player, what tips do you have to address my above problems? Is she just not viable anymore due to all the nerfs? What’s a hero that is still viable that we should play instead?

Mei has had heavy handed nerfs. She can barely do her job affectively anymore. The time to freeze is bad. The ammo clip is horrible. The nerf on the cooldown for her ice wall was unneeded after they added pillars. They also screwed her over in her cyrofreeze by having her act like a “wall” instead of the ally team mate she is.

She isn’t to be feared too much anymore. She is very niche in certain maps and maybe a good pick on super dive comps.

I don’t have much advice to give because I’ve simply moved away from her as it hurts to play that character. Blizzard doesn’t care because most people are happy the ice queen is buried. She may stay this way for a long time sadly.

 Mei. First played her. Most played dps.

She is in the worse state she has ever been. Truth.

She’s now better at holding chokes than Orisa. I play QPC and it’s where i still play my tanks and supports, but Orisa’s too weak and keeps getting run over. Previously it happens when enemies ignore her shield and run through it, but now the shield breaks too fast and too often and… well… she gets run over way too often.

Now i’ve found Mei to hold a choke better so i just pick her on maps where i need strong defense.

With a LOT of communication and only on maps with small chokes. Make sure to switch off on super open maps like Junkertown first point.

She gets ult charge real quick so she’s good on defense maps. If you can land her headshots she’s almost as good as a sniper. Her ult stuns for 5 seconds she’s good in close range comps like brawling comps. Of course she must be with someone else to get good use. Walls are for separating the enemy team so use that to make a 6vs 6 a 5 vs 6.

As much as I hate to say it. The simple answer is she isn’t. She was nerfed so hard, she’s effectively a throw pick as of this time. Hopefully Blizzard realizes and tries to get her out of the trash can.
