I am genuinely curious. For those that say Gency isn’t real after this event, what makes you think they are just good friends?
This is NOT a salty “I am a shipper/ and or hate Gency” topic. I am curious about this for real and want to know ya’ll’s thoughts
i mean, technically and realistically speaking, a man and a woman can be friends and have that exact dialogue.
they could just be friends.
but looking at other pop media, movies, etc it seems unlikely that these two fictional characters wont be dating anytime soon.
key word is: unlikely. nothing is confirmed so everything is possible.
we just know that they have a lot of chemistry and sympathy for each other. they seem to be quite close, but we dont know where the line is yet.
Because shippers are in denial and want Pharmercy to exist.

well considering we havent gotten aton of mercy lore and genji only usually gets side roles in lore missions its not surprising we know so little about their relationship.
He’s only in love with the healing.

To be honest, given how much of Genji’s body has been replaced by cybernetics, it’s not that he can do much to… deepen the relationship, besides being extra nice to her.
One thing that disturbs Gency is the character relationship in an actual match: in the same team, Genji just goes to flank and is quite hard for Mercy to heal him. On the opposing team, Genji spends so much time beating up Mercy that is borderline domestic abuse.
This is also why Pharmercy became a thing: in a match, Mercy and Pharah complement each other so well they seem made to work together.
Wish the devs had made something that would make Mercy and Genji actually be a functional unit together… and Genjis not making Mercy their number 1 target would help, too.
If going for dinner with someone after saying things among the lines " this is a payback for this thing " and " the things I do to find someone to talk to " mean romance then I suppose I would be having more than 10 boyfriends by now.
Just letting you know. Chu said he has his lower parts in tact still…

Ok but, what reasons can you guys provide to state your opinion on them being just friends?
For example:
Gency shippers use : Valentines day lines, comic, the fact Chu reposts a lot of Gency, etc.
I am just looking for some good debates on it.
I know this is probably the most interesting thing to come out of this event, but I think it’s time to let it go.
To answer your question though, it’s because the lines are suggestive of a relationship and not a direct confirmation. It’s likely intentionally left up to interpretation.
It’s honestly pointless though, because it wouldn’t even matter if Genji and Mercy literally stripped down and screwed right there in front of Maximilian as soon as the mission was over. People who don’t want them together would still call them friends.
Some people say that the ship is canon because Chu denied McCree and Ashe ever having one, so why didn’t he deny this one after 3 years?

No, but why specifically McCree and Ashe then?
Anything else would be Mercy taking grossly advantage of a recovering patient (of hers) who’s struggling with repressed anger and body dysphoria.
Being friends and helping each other out when they struggle with loneliness and issues is alright in my books. They both seem to need a friend on these troubling times. But Genji is not ready for relationships yet mental health wise and Mercy is probably still his doctor, if not his psychotherapist and taking advantage of his gratefulness of saving his life is honestly eugh and so out of character for Angela.
Let them be good friends and Genji can drink her horrible coffee and have conversations and Angela gets some fellow insomniac to talk to. And nothing more is needed.
well it is 6 years in the past. there is chance they tried and it didnt work. guess we find out more in a few years as they trickle more ‘lore’ 
I can’t say for sure, but Chu probably likes the pairing and I think the only reason he hasn’t committed to it is because that whole team is just a little too worried about people’s fanfictions.
