No one likes getting into a match and seeing “Defeat!” immediately.
So how about we brainstorm how to tackle the issue?
My ideas are as follows. (These are by no means original, but I think warrant more discussion)
If you leave a game - any game - within one or two minutes of it ending your account is flagged to prioritize one backfill game. Even if you already found a game before the one you left ends your next game will prioritize backfill. This would also alert the user that they left a game early and will be backfilling the next game. It should also let the user know that if they want to avoid this they should stay in games until they are done. (Note: they will not get the extra XP from backfilling. Thanks Sprklmufin!)
If you are backfilling (not because of 1.) and you stay in the game till it is over you are then given one or two games guaranteed that are not backfill. Also give better rewards for getting backfill and sticking with it! Thanks again Sprklmufin
Here is a suggestion I also think is good!
I’m sure there are other ideas floating around.
What do you think of these ideas? Do you have your own?
Heres a bold one. Accept that people have already written the match off as a loss and are leaving (or are leaving to keep their XP down) and stop having a tantrum every time it happens.
I don’t care what they have written off as a loss. I have backfilled games that I won simply because I chose a healer and got to the point fast enough.
I’ve literally backfilled into games that were in OT where we were going to lose and me picking a healer and trying my best helped us win.
So, no, I will not simply accept that they have written off the match as a loss when that is not even true.
So we have established we are not okay with simply accepting that “people have already written off the match” because that’s one of the weakest arguments I’ve ever heard.
And trying to keep their XP down? I do not care in the slightest about people doing this and, if they are that concerned with it, they can simply not play the game.
I haven’t thrown any tantrums either, but it is quite telling that you have to say something like this. It really helps illustrate the irrational nature of your position.
Thats nice, want a cookie? The other person already decided, screw this I’m out. It’s been going on for 20+ years and will continue to happen. People not having fun while playing a game for leisure WILL LEAVE.
Simple. Just remove the benefit of leaving a game. By banning the person for 10 minutes or the remaining duration of a game they left. Whichever is higher.
The reason people leave is to “save time”. Remove that benefit and people will stay.
You may opt. out of back fill under the game settings, but if you do leave a game early, your put back into the back fill que’s for a duration of time as punishment.
Expand telemetry and categorize leavers and then attempt to avoid the detected situations/penalize them.
My guess is I leave around 50 matches a year.
Well, leave isn’t exactly the right word. You see, over time Overwatch’s performance on my machine has steadily gotten worse and on some patches it exhibits terrible performance and instability. When I first got Overwatch I could hold 30+ while watching a tv show and having 5-10 other programs running (I’ve never played much on high fps so 30 doesn’t bug me like it would other people). Nowadays, I’m lucky if the game can stay above 20 during the first minute of gameplay when I’m running nothing else. Once the game has seen every hero and most of their abilities the FPS tends to stabilize more around 27.
Fix why people leave in the first place. Probably going to see a decrease on it when forced 2-2-2 comes out, which increases the chances of having an actual engaging and fun fight in QP.
