HOTTEOK: D.Va seems inadequate in OW2-B

Perfect Weather for a Hotteok, except that it’s raining all sorts of laser beams, D.Va’s a huge target, they nerfed her armor, and her umbrella cannot stop it, so she’s down before she can even take a bite.

Honestly though, I can’t help but question the philosophy of balance behind D.Va in her current state. She has an extremely large critbox, limited armor, Defense Matrix provides very little protection both in terms of active time as well as the limited types of damage that it’s capable of blocking in the first place. I honestly feel like at this point they might as well just remove Defense Matrix and replace it with another ability because it just feels too situational at this point. Too narrow a window of protection with inadequate coverage. Obviously, I would prefer it if they just buffed DM to make it provide protection against all damage sources like other Tanks abilities do, but evidently the developers feel that would make D.Va too powerful so DM needs to have like 3 seconds of up time which only blocks hits scan and certain projectiles.

Defense Matrix has major drawbacks given it’s limited range. That’s the general consensus amongst the D.Va mains out there. She does not provide the same sort of anchor that Sig, Rein or even the new Orisa does as far as playing behind her, so she really is struggling to find a niche, as Ball and Doom are better Dive Tanks, while Rein and Sig are better Anchor Tanks.

She hypothetically is a hybrid of both, but isn’t good at either.

Honestly, I haven’t played the beta but I’m more curious about her survival outside of mech since there’s only gonna be one tank.

Getting demeched in the beta is even worse than on live. With one less person, and tanks only giving 70% ult charge it is very difficult to build a new mech during a fight or before the other team is ready to start the next fight. If your team ends up winning the fight, but you are still baby D.Va then they are at a massive disadvantage in the next fight.

She probably could use an increase to her passive ult charge, living without the mech for more than 10s is way too much.

because off tanks like dva need a main tank to work alongside
a bit like how this game was designed with at least 2 tanks per team

it’s almost like they forgot the basic structure of their own game when they thinned it out in a desperate bid (that will fail) to make ow2 a popular esport

Yep. I’m going to advocate for D.Va buffs until the day I stop playing OW (or until they buff Dva). She’s just not good right now. I don’t see a real reason to use her. In OWL, she’s underperforming as well. Maybe Blizzard will listen to that.

I’m not sure why they nerfed her suvivability, I think she needed that extra armor they took away.

I’ll also say that her ult feels bordering on useless in the new game.

Yeah, pretty much every time I’ve seen D.va on beta, they either feed, or they do nothing useful because they’re too scared to get into the action and feed. Probably the worst tank right now, does nothing that others can’t do better.

I think they should seriously consider giving her pilot form some abilities like in HoTS. A solo Tank being able to be trapped and staggered in such a helpless form is just too detrimental in 5v5.

Other than that, at the bare minimum, they need to bring her armor back up and try 12 meter Matrix.

Yep, terrible tank in OW2.

A solo tank who needs another tank to get value.

DVA feels like an Orisa situation where maybe the devs just want to rework her. They always joke about how she breaks the game due to her coding and I feel like by now, they probably could find a simpler way to handle her mechanics, behind the scenes

Kit wise, DVA could go in so many different ways. In OW1, I always felt like she should move from being an “in your face” close range tank and more of a nimble tank with her generous mobility that kites the enemy team while blocking enemy damage.

Now in OW2, the biggest hope I have is that they give her pilot form some new features. Make it feel like an actual hero instead of a weird (yet cool) liability. If baby dva is supposed to be a weakness then MEKA DVA should definitely feel stronger and more frightening. Wreckingball would have the best regroup speed and DVA, with her potential to be staggered, would be the slowest regroup speed. (probably could use an escape ability or some defensive tool like a weaker wristwatch Defense Matrix or Sym’s throwable barrier)

Hopefully though, they just make her a true ‘duo-hero’ and give both modes some actual utility/agency over fights

A Mini Defense Matrix for Baby D.Va would be excellent, especially if it charged Passive Ult at an accelerated rate.

Buffed, nerfed, she’ll still have the worst mains playing her. Terribly.

Finally, we have a contender.

Do you want to join the VIP dva discord server?

count me in

im honoured :))

not technically.

Early days it was just 1 tank.

i mean early days we could run duplicate heroes. (oh the days of walking throguh hanamaru’s gate and being met with a team full of torb’s turrets…)

i mean they have gone on record saying OW2’s focus is the PvE.
