Hot Take: Sombra and Widow are fine right now

I have seen a lot of posts complaining about the sombra changes and the amount of widow players. Here is the thing, widow is not hard to counterplay, and the new sombra will take some time for players to “relearn”. I understand sombra may not be as strong as she was and that widow feels stronger, but once again, there are some problems here. In nearly every game I play with a widow, it is constant complaints from my team to kill the widow, but no one will swap to counterpick, dive her, etc. The biggest problem with sombra, though, is that since she isn’t permanantly invis anymore, people have to think before they can walk behind the support and sit there until they are alone. Overall, we can’t expect things to be perfect within the first 2 weeks of a patch, not just in OW either, in any game.

Without Sombra how can we counter Widow??

(Nervous glance at half the roster that can easily dive Widow)

Debatable.

But the problem is that the emotional quality of the counterplay sucks.

Here’s my interpretation of Cadwell/Walker’s work defining formal Counterplay. (I.e. Riot and Valve)

“After you make your Choice, your Opponent should have the capability, to respond with their Choice, which includes the awareness that a Choice exists, and enough time to understand and react with their Choice”.

But you can take your pick:

Like are we violating Tom Cadwell’s principle that counterplay should not just have the capability to counter, but the time and obviousness that a counter should be used.

Or are we violating the Sid Meier and Soren Johnson, style “Optimizing Fun out of Games” design issue? Where “Technically possible to defeat” was absolutely not sufficient by itself.

Or Robin Walker’s “We literally designed the character Widow is based on, and we empirically measured that onesided counterplay lost significant amounts of players”

And, my post, where I detail how every other modern PVP FPS game in existence follows the above rules.
But not Overwatch.

Like if your Business is trying to engineer the emotional concept of “Fun”.
It’s bonkers to act like the emotional aspects don’t matter.

If you are not masters+ your opinion on widow is quite literally unimportant and without weight.

If you can’t backtrack your game design suggestions to “More players” or “More dollars”.
Then a multi-billion dollar companies shouldn’t listen to you.

I can backtrack things to better gameplay. Metal ranks don’t have to deal with good widow players, therefore their opinions on widow do not matter.

Widow is a masters+ hero. Always has been, always will be.

No you can’t.

You can backtrack it so some gibberish that you gave your own personal definitions to.

No multi-billion dollar company should listen to “I MADE THIS ALL UP IN MY HEAD AND IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH GAME DESIGN INDUSTRY STANDARDS”

Sombra didn’t get changed because she was uncounterable. She was hardly doing well for herself out there. People found her really annoying to play into. That’s what actually matters and Widow is also guilty of being a chore to go up against.

Yes I can.

People don’t like widow, widow is poorly designed and unfun to play against. On top of that, she’s basically only accessible to 3% of the playerbase. Being one shot from saigon, is not fun. A hero being horrid for 97% of the playerbase is not a good thing.

So you change the hero.

for sure sombra is still a real good widow counter but yea it isnt as silly as before where you can just walk across the map and station yourself right behind the widow

now it takes planning as sombra but if you do get behind the widow its more deadly than before if you land hack first and if you hit virus its even sillier damage than the last version of sombra

just have to “make” it to the widow is the issue with pauses along the way heh

Fascinating commentary.

Yeah. It’s almost as if it’s a video game and if something is hilariously unfun to most of the community that the hero matters to, that there is a constant discussion going on everywhere about the hero in a negative light, they should be changed.

This isn’t a “oh it’s just you” moment. People hate widowmaker lmfao.

More fun = more money.

I mean… yeah…

I genuinely wonder if you think “How do you fix Widow”.

The answer shouldn’t be “By fixing Widow”.

It isn’t… Obviously??

The answer to fix widow is an in-depth rework of the character. No duh buddy. Like??? Did you need that spelt out for you?

  • Hero is frustrating to play against
  • Hero is unfun to play against
  • Hero is unengaging to play against
  • Hero is unaccessible to 97% of the playerbase

A. Hero should stay the same?
B. Hero should change?

Fascinating commentary

I can’t tell if you are purposefully a moron or if this is by accident?

Are you looking to me, to give you some in-depth rework idea? I’m not a hero designer buddy, that’s up to the people creative enough to suggest changes.

I’m just here to tell you changes need to happen. You’ve somehow gone from talking about blizzard not making money to coming at me because I didn’t lay out a blueprint for a widow redesign for you lmfao.

Oh, we’ve already gotten to the point where you think you personally get to define Math terms. Based entirely on a hunch.

I’m just having fun with this.

She is the second most popular dps after genji for casuals in qp for 9 years straight sure people arent good enough to comp her, but same person plays her in qp.

she is literal marketing for the game being the coolest montage maker for the game after genji.

She is a shop favourite and makes money.

This game died when they started listening to people and nerfed dive and practically deleted marketing for the game.

There are no math terms at play here.

Again, I know you are a seemingly a bit on the slower side. Let me spell it out slowly for you.

  • Hero is unfun
  • Community doesn’t like hero one shotting from Hong Kong
  • Hero is inaccessible to 97% of the playerbase
  • Hero should be changed and improved

That’s it. I’m not giving you some in-depth redesign, that’s not my job. I’m just telling you what should happen with the hero that most people don’t enjoy playing up against and causes problems because she’s poorly designed.

I am talking about inaccessible in terms of winning. She has a negative winrate in every single rank other than masters+ so like I said… she’s a masters+ hero. She should be balanced and designed as such.

She’s a constant point of frustration in overwatch and a balancing nightmare with her current design.

People DO NOT like getting hit by an instantaneous hitscan one shot, from an uncontestable range.
