Hot take: game needs a pick/ban draft phase

It’s time to go the Paladins/Moba route; a full draft/ban phase before the game where you can see what the other team is picking and no in-game hero switching. And both teams can use the same heroes, so either mirror the other team or try to counter them.

Pretty much every other game similar to OW has it.

Everything else they do trying to balance this current mess will only be bandaid fixes that don’t actually solve the core balancing issues.

I stopped playing OW because constantly having to switch heroes is exhausting and not fun at all. And they’re constantly trying to catch up in terms of balancing but they constantly fix one thing and break another.

They will never be able to balance the game in it’s current format. Just like they gave up trying to balance OW1 after the goats meta.

removing hero switching would be detrimental to the game as a whole

HOWEVER

we do need hero bans at the very least, without them the meta becomes stale and this is amplified by blizzard’s lack of urgency

People would just ban Hog, Orisa, Sojourn, Junkrat all game.

That sounds like a good thing

Or play those games instead, not to be mean.
But hero switching is one of the core mechanics of the game.
If the enemy switches at the last second but you can’t switch because the game starts they could have won the game in the hero select screen thats no fun.

They already tried this before… on paper it “makes sense” I guess, but in practice it didn’t translate very well.

I think most of us play the game to have fun, and that heavily includes which heroes we all decided to main. I personally hate the mechanics of Brig because I don’t get much enjoyment swinging a flail around.

I do however love the mechanics of Zenyatta since it requires you to be more calculated with your game play which I just find way more interesting and engaging. If they decide to ban Zenyatta for a week, chances are I will either just play tank or not play at all.

It would be an objectively bad move for Blizzard to re implement this again for multiple reasons, which they should be focusing on making the game MORE engaging instead of the exact opposite by arbitrarily punishing casual players who just want to load up a few games with friends and zoom around on Mercy for a bit.

Especially considering the current state of matchmaking, which is in addition to all other balls Blizzard dropped since the OW2’s initial launch (the bronze 5 glitch in ranked, the login screen queue wait time, the mid-game server disconnects, the mandatory SMS verification debacle, etc).

No they didn’t, what they tried wasn’t player picked bans but automated random ban. Its crazy bad.

I do like the idea of a pick/ban phase, it’d allow us as players to provide our own bandaid fix for poorly balanced heroes until they get changed. And it’s a self-balancing system for every rank.

Low ranks get to ban heroes that are too strong there, like Genji, Pharah, Junkrat etc, high ranks get to ban heroes that either define or counter a meta.
