You may as well add him to the DPS section as a ‘really slow, high health, low DPS but with a good heal’ category. None of his skills help the team in any way shape or form.
Utter trash pick

Utter trash pick
Well he is not trash, but he indeed is more of a DPS with big HP pool.
I guess it depends what you consider “defensive”.
If it’s something that makes a hero harder to kill, take a breather is a massive heal and a 50% damage reduction. Obviously this only applies to Hog, but it’s still a defensive skill in my opinion.
I also think you could make a strong case for hook being a defensive ability. A good Roadhog peeling for your supports is a thing of beauty. In that sense, he can offer some very potent peeling, which I would consider defensive.
Frankly, I don’t really buy into the Roadhog is trash thing. He might not be the strongest hero, but I really don’t see him as weak.
He’s got some of the best CC/Peel for punishing poor team positioning. That goes hand in hand with being a tank.
Love me some Hog. He plays differently than other tanks, but is still a tank. Doesn’t his E give him a damage reduction while using it? I feel like some players that complain about heroes don’t fully know how they work.
Hog used to be my main, he is a shadow of his former self, people only play him now for something a bit different. He is a much worse pick than playing Zarya for example.
Hog is only viable for gold and below where people just stray away from their team.
Giving himself damage reduction and healing isn’t a tank ability, soldier has a self heal. It would be if his self heal was like Brig and also gave nearby team mates heal or damage reduction at the same time.
I play him as a bullet sponge. His stomach is his shield.
I wish more people played hog as a bodyguard, frankly.
I’m a Zen main, and I still remember one game a few months ago where my team’s hog said he was just going to peel for me the whole game. We had been struggling with flankers and ambushes, but when Hog focused entirely on defending the back line rather than looking for picks on the front, we turned the game around almost instantly.
This isn’t to say that Hog has no value on the front line, but a lot of Hog players seem to completely neglect the back line, despite it being an area where Hog can really shine and positively influence the game.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I treasure Roadhog when nobody picks him.
Self heal… damage mitigation… high hp to avoid one shots and repositioning tool for enemies that can land ohko kills… sure he’s not a tank.
If they wanted to buff him they can make his body like a shield. LOS for others behind him like him being a shield for D.VA’s ult.
Take a breather is his defensive skill
Although vulnerable during his ult since he can’t really heal himself. That’s why you should always focus Hog during his ult.
I mainly play Hog as an Support body guard. Always protect the Zen.
I agree that people should treat him as a dps when building a comp, cause he’s not a main tank, he’s barely an off tank but he preforms well as a 3rd tank. Kinda how brigitte is not a main healer, not great as an off healer but put her in as an off-off support and she starts to shine
When using his Take a Breather ability his defense goes up dramatically. That’s a defensive skill.
Aside from that, more offense heroes tend to have defensive skills than tanks.
He’s good for grabbing picks and forcing players out of position when barriers are down (or just not being played).
He suffers a lot from how much Rein is played though, as everyone can easily keep out of danger from him. Just another victim of Reinhardtwatch.
Hog is a bullet sponge. He soaks damage, that would otherwise go to your team. You can’t ignore him, since he’s so dangerous, so you have to focus fire him.
Sounds pretty tanky to me.
He isn’t a tank, he’s just a fat guy who murders stuff. Anyone who justifies his pick as “tanking” is full of themselves
Agreed. I like him how he is. He’s not a typical “block damage” tank. He’s still a tank, though, in that he pulls a lot of aggro and makes space for his team. Just his existence in some areas creates space because of the threat of a potential hook. He commands much more respect than a DPS because of the area he can control without much risk to himself.
