Which DPS heroes take the highest amount of skill to play effectively?
And which DPS heroes difficulty (to play) is highly exaggerated, in your opinion?
For me, the “high skill” DPS heroes are:
Tracer:
Overbuff statistics agree with that, tbh, she is only reall good in GM+
Widow:
Fully reliant on mechanical skill
Echo:
her ultimate
DPS Heroes that are not that difficult to play but people tell you that they are:
Genji:
Imo, his kit is pretty forgiving, nano
blade
Doomfist:
punch bot
Ashe:
she is kinda difficult due to her Aim requirement but unlike widow her
abilities are extremely strong.
P. S.
(It is just my opinion, there is no “right or wrong”)
I think difficulty should be a composite of mechanics, game sense, how forgiving their kit is, and their match up spread.
By all of those metrics, I think Doomfist is hands down the most difficult DPS. Punch bot Doom only works against bad and/or dumb players.
Intense mechanics, needs a solid grasp on not only their cooldowns but of the entire enemy team, deep map knowledge, countered by like a third of the cast and hard countered by like a sixth, garbo ult that’s not gonna kill anyone who isn’t AFK, garbage gun that won’t kill anyone who isn’t so close you can smell their breath or already has one foot in the grave. He does have a fairly simple gameplay style of a few preset combos, but the hard part is being able to do them and get out alive or finding how to get even more value out of it. Plus play any Doom parkour map and you’ll see he has the highest movement skill ceiling in the game or at least extremely close to Ball.
By those same metrics, I think Widow is overrated, since she’s all aim. She usually plays in a safe position, has a favorable match up against literally every non-tank other than Sombra and an even one against dive DPS (they can kill her easier than other squishies, but she still only needs 1 click to kill them). She’s not easy ofc, but not even in the same tier as Doom, Genji and Ashe. She also comes with one fairly good get out of jail free card.
Ashe and McCree also require a ton of aim to pull off effectively but don’t have the leisure of getting to take potshots from a different map like Widow and their get out of jail free cards aren’t nearly as good.
Highest skill cap heroes in terms of mechanical skill combined with huge amount of gamesense and vertical+horizontal gameplay thinking are:
Tracer -> decision making on blinks and recall is infinite.
Genji -> horizontal and vertical gameplay combined with fast high precision reactions and probably the second hardest cooldowns to master after blinks and recall.
Widow -> „easier“ than tracer and Genji in terms of „thinking“ harder in terms of aim - point and click + enemy movement prediction (in OW adad movement is stronger than high GM aim)
Mccree -> hard to get max value (headshots over bodyshots frequently) probably one of the hardest positioning in the game furthermore you have to take care of dropdamage and always play on „optimal“ range
Ana -> decision making non stop, value of CDs can be useless or gamebreaking
Ashe requires just as much aim ability (more shots, yes, but less damage and range so it balances out), while having a larger hitbox but simultaneously being forced into a shorter range, longer reload, and Coach Gun is a much worse getaway than Grapple. It deals damage and works faster, but the range is so much smaller the Ashe will usually die anyways without immediate back up.
I suppose Ashe is easier if your game plan is the spam dynamite and BOB though.
