High ping for literally no reason

I love overwatch and have put lots of hours into the game. Recently for no reason my ping is really high. It happens to no other games I own on the computer, I’ve restarted my computer three times, I’ve uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, ive looked up every tutorial to get rid of ping, and I even have haste! (which lowers lag for gaming). I’m just so lost! It wasn’t doing this a couple weeks ago! I just got new and better internet and i’m getting nice download and upload! (Keep in mind it was working fine before i got my new internet and 2 weeks after i did. It’s fiber optic.) I just need help. I really wanna play the game, but for some reason its unplayable! Please help!

(Edit)
Please someone answer! I’ve lowered my graphics and the ping is even higher now! I don’t know whats going on im so confused why is this happening??? HELP???

Which country do you play from, what are your up/down speeds, which region do you play in and what is your ping?

United States, 34 ping, 6.43 download, 8.65 upload, and i play in the america servers.

Are you sharing your internet or using wifi?
If you dont have ping/RTT monitor enabled ingame, I suggest you put it on.
If you’re using a router, it might need to be reconfigured or a hard reboot.

I have to use Wifi because we don’t have another wire in the house, but the wifi was working fine a couple weeks ago. I will see about rebooting the router. Also if you are talking about being able to see your ping/fps, i have that enabled. If not i will go do that now. Thanks for replying!

I’m using Ethernet and still have issues with rtt fluctuating between 80 and 30, but with a ping of 20 almost all the time. Resetting the router wont fix it, nor will messing with my adapter settings; so I think it’s on blizz’s end

I’m at 200+ ping. I used to be at the appropriate ping of 30-40, but for some reason im just not anymore. I’m just so confused.

Is it just me or does it happen during OWL more often than not?

Perhaps, but you can always follow @BlizzardCS on twitter to get the latest about any server issues or scheduled maintenance on the servers. If no one that you’re matched with ingame is having similar issues, then it is likely an issue on your end.

I’d suggest you try a wired connection. Wifi is immensely inferior to a wired connection in terms of speed and reliability. There are just too many variables when it comes to wireless connections, and home routers/APs and wifi adapters/cards tend to underperform when high amounts of data are transferred wirelessly for a longer period of time.

A part from a hard reboot, you could try and boost the signal (not recommended) or change the broadcasting channel on your router if you live in a wifi-dense area like a building complex etc.
But try to get an ethernet cable whenever you get the chance. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve been having the same problem too. My Blizzard App is super laggy, and when i open Overwatch, it reaches about 160-300 ping, making it unplayable. I’ve tried many things, including reinstalling, but it hasnt changed at all.

Hey i’m back and the ping is still crap! I have ethernet now and literally every other game I own runs fine. Speedtest . net is saying i have 30 ping, but I guess overwatch just doesnt agree with that statement of fact. I’m honestly super mad and I just want this to end! Please! I gave overwatch internet priority, I rebooted like 7 times, I have tried every stupid little thing. PLEASE GIVE ME A REASON THIS IS HAPPENING BLIZZARD THANKS!!

Hey again Radzuli!

Run traceroute by following the steps described here:
https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/7870

Then copy and paste the results here. (Make sure to use the “</>” button in the taskbar for the results for better readability).

For some reason my cmd wont let me run as an admin.

I have the same Problem. I use LAN connection.
First the game ran smoothly with 30 ms ping for months.
But since a few month I usually have 300 to 1000 ms ping.

How does it help me?

I dont really know how this forum stuff works. Hope this thread is not too old.
If somebody can help me I really appreciate it.

Hi Ian,

This thread is from 2018 so it is a bit old. The tracert that you ran doesn’t show any visible issues, although if the ping issue comes and goes then a traceroute would not be very good at capturing it.

I would recommend starting a new thread and posting your WinMTR results.
You can run a WinMTR in the background while you play and that would better capture ping spikes like you are describing.
